Growing up with and within hip hop has helped me understand so much about historical rewriting and re-framing of history, politics, etc. because now I see clearly that completely erroneous (or sometimes not simply lacking context and insight but truly maliciously incorrect propaganda) mainstream takes on culture eventually win out, no matter what. Black suburbanites, Immigrants and CACs have truly succeeded in erasing the widespread criticism of The Score as some hip hop ABBA shyt. Some people truly champion Wyclef as a legend. People "miss" the Ja Rule era. Hammer is a black musical legend. Because the American capitalist ethos is so deeply embedded in all subcultures at this point, any and all transgressions against principle and integrity can be rationalized as "evolving." In fact, dude said "hey it's not like he was singing The Beatles - he was doing Lionel Richie and Hammer." That sentence is phenomenal in how culturally tone deaf it is. Lionel Richie wasn't some symbol of black excellence after he left The Commodores - he made schmaltzy pop music. Dancing On The Ceiling and All Night Long weren't black cookout joints, my aunts and uncles weren't jamming to that shyt at the crib. People are culturally illiterate, and aggressive in their wrongness. It's as fascinating as it is terrifying.

The problem with discussing this is The Coli has become so dichotomous on all topics: everything in this thread seems to hinge on whether you're a c00n or a faux-militant. Neither is really relevant in this case. I don't see this ruining racial progress. But it is funky as fukk. Imagine Bruce Springsteen performing Born In The USA at the Republican National Convention. Or imagine the chef at one of our country's top restaurants partnering with McDonald's to make a limited time only sandwich. Some compromises will really seem absurd and disheartening to people who have some sort of cultural literacy. If Marcus Samuelsson made a Scandinavian themed Filet-O-Fish only an uninformed, obstinate, or foolish person would say "what's the big deal here? nikkas can't make fish sandwiches without you fake food nazis hating?" shyt is hilarious.
