I know The Lox was a part of the Ruff Ryders, but it was later. Mase was never a Ruff Ryder. That one I need to see proof on. Mase never even was a Ruff Ryder once it became a full fledged imprint on Interscope.
Fam. Check this out. Jadakiss used to battle for the Ruff Ryders camp when X wasn’t around. It was a whole camp my nikka. Mase was wit them as well. He was a Ruff Ryder. DMX even explained the whole shyt in his EARL book. shyt. LOX had to be bought out for 3 million to get on Interscope. By the time everything really came together. Mase had retired as a rapper. Remember Mase retired after Double Up. Mase was done with rapping months after Vol. 1 came out.

P was on Let's Ride (nr 1 on Billboard Hot 100 songs), South Park Chef's Aid (when SP was a MASSIVE deal), featured on Ice Cube's You Know I'm A Hoe, Make Em Say Uhh and I Got The Hook-Up were smashes that got play on MTV, he was performing on the MTV Music Awards with newly signed Snoop Dogg, made The Source cover twice that year etc etc

I remember all of these, but he wasn't bigger than X or Jay. X was on his debut and had a huge '98 without having massive singles. Jay had some hits and HKL had his biggest hit, which got him his biggest album at that point. In regard to P, MP Da Last Don wasn't on par with IDAHIH or HKL in any regard (acclaim, sales, or popularity).

His first two albums aren't exactly a treat to listen to regardless of their impact. He's just not that type of artist, not everybody needs to be.

This is what I'm getting at, if The Lox were on Ruff Ryders they wouldn't have to be bought out for 3 million to get on Interscope. Who were they being bought from?

Cyphering with other camps doesn't mean they were officially Ruff Ryders. Like I said, there were artists who were running with Irv and Ja including DMX and Jay, but no one really ever considered them Murder Inc. artists despite them forming of a group of the same name.

Mase was never on Ruff Ryders. Yeah, he retired right around the time RR was getting hot, but he was never a Ruff Ryder. Like I said before, he was doing business outside of Bad Boy and it wasn't with Ruff Ryders, it was with JD and So So Def. He even had a connection with Eve by encouraging her to continue her pursuit of rap and quit stripping, but it wasn't via RR. She ended up signing with Aftermath and ended up on Ruff Ryders after her Aftermath album was shelved.

:what: Fam. They had to be bought out cause Ruff Ryders wasn’t a LABEL until AFTER they were signed to Bad Boy. Mase and Lox was running with Ruff Ryders and we’re being managed by them. They weren’t signed Ruff Ryders artists cause there was nothing to fukkin sign to fam. Lol

Disagree. I was bumpin IDAHIH just today in the whip due to this thread. shyt was actually refreshing to listen to. Lol

It's dope to listen to every now and then but in terms of how nikkas frame the 'classic' argument of albums having to be flawless or being able to translate to the musical landscape 20 years down the line, it doesn't really tick those boxes.

Doesn't keep those first two albums from being classics, but "replay value" yada yada.

A classic doesn’t have to be timeless. It can be something that captures the time frame perfectly. Barely anything is truly timeless.

So they weren't Ruff Ryders until at least '99.

That's what I'm talking about, how could they be Ruff Ryders when they weren't even a label or much of a crew until after The Lox were signed to Bad Boy. Being managed by Dee and Wah didn't make them Ruff Ryders. Running with them didn't make them Ruff Ryders either. The Lox were Bad Boys in every that mattered until they defected in '99 and started the campaign to be released.

Mase was never Ruff Ryder.

Bro they was a crew. Read DMX’s book fam. U could spot Jadakiss in old ass DMX videos from like 93-94. From the way u talkin. DMX wasn’t Ruff Ryders either since he was with Def Jam. U not making sense fam. They was all Ruff Ryders nikkas they just went and sign in different places until the label got on the ground. And Mase retired.

X was Ruff Ryders. He had songs reppin them and they were in his videos rockin' the gear and everything. There wasn't any question that he was aRuff Ryder. Huge difference between The Lox and Mase reppin Bad Boy. When has Mase ever said he was a Ruff Ryder or even repped them. The Lox didn't do so until '99.

Swizz is also getting overrated and unerrated at the same time:

1) Aside from Cassidy, Swizz never MADE anyone's career.

2) Swizz's '99-'01 gets downplayed something awful. In '99, dude was everywhere. There was Ryde or Die, and Eve's debut.

3) Contrary to Coli narrative, some of Swizz's tracks still sound great.

4) Swizz was hardly a producer that anyone sought for more than a few songs on an album outside of the RR comps, X, and Eve's first two. He never excelled in that department in the way that Dre, Premo, or Timbaland did to where it didn't matter whether it was somebody as huge or legendary as Jay or Nas or whether it was unknown artist or a debut they worked on, there were artists going to them for 3-4 joints if not the bulk of an album. Swizz not so much. In fact, his hand in the RR comps, Eve, and X albums dwindled significantly.
He made x,eve, cassidy and the RR compilation's popular

This.

I'm seeing a lot of bizarre posts like Silkk, Mystikal, Master P, Busta Rhymes and others were on par with DMX on 1998. None of them were. Only artists on par with DMX in 1998 were Jay Z and Lauryn Hill. The three of them were clearly on a different level than everybody else in terms of popularity and acclaim. Then you had Puff and Mase still going strong from '97. "Lookin' At Me" and 24 Hrs. To Live" were still makong their rounds well into the summer. Puff's "Victory" and the "Been Aroind The World" remix were still hot.
I specifically said they were bigger pre RR anthem. And that is true
