But that's the problem, you admit you can't comment past a certain year, and that's cool, but these mainstream white outlets also can't make sweeping assumptions about the positivity of hip hop when they're not a part of the culture. They've ignored acts who were huge in the genre and had a positive message, mackelmore crossed over cuz his color (plus his sound was a lot more pop than soul) they now see him as what hip hop needs when we had that, in the forefront, at one point. they didn't give it the time of day, they were too busy being enamored by the snoop dogg's, 2pac's, wu tangs, 50 cents and dmx's they now shun. You can't make sweeping claims such as that article without proper perspective or due diligence, which is clear the original author does not have.You answered your own question right there. They're not comparable to Macklemore, Kanye, Kendrick etc. Anything before 98ish is before my time, i can't comment on the mainstream reception of 'positive' hiphop outside of my generation, i just know within my generation i've witnessed a clear bias towards these artists.
