I didnt know men actually cared about Beyonce or Aaliyah enough to warrant a 15 page thread.

Aaliyah was cool and all mostly due to her hip production. Having Missy and Timberland in your corner musically when they were in their prime is what made anyone care about Aaliyah.

No disrespect, but Aaliyah = Ciara = Ashanti = a bunch of other decent R&B acts that arent really legends or GOATs. Only difference is she died on top and tragically.

Now somebody makes a thread about it and its a debate? Cuz Drake decided to rob her graveyard?

Drake runs you lil nikkas.

*waits for somebody to make a 'Nastradamus is a slept on classic' thread*

People brush past this point though. After 2000, where were Brandy & Monica :pachaha: Within like 2 years, it went from Aaliyah, Brandy & Monica to Aaliyah, Alicia & Ashanti.

Them hoes were MIA after the 90s for the most part :manny:

Yeah but this also has to do with when these artists had albums out. If Monica doesn't drop an album in 2000 or 2001, then obviously someone has her spot that year. If Brandy doesn't drop music in 2000 or 2001, someone has that spot. Granted, they never got back to being the stars they were in the late-90s. But people also like to forget Aaliyah wasn't setting the world on fire with that 2001 album before she died either. "We Need A Resolution" wasn't a smash lead-off hit, and the album was sliding down the charts... "Rock Da Boat" and her passing brought it back up. shyt definitely changed pretty quick tho', cause the late-90s/early 2000s was when artists were still being developed and albums were selling like crazy. Destiny's Child had blown up HUGE in '99 with that second album so they were moving to the front, then Alicia and Ashanti had came "practically" outta nowhere and sold like mad, Mya was still shining... meanwhile chicks like Brandy and Monica were taking three year breaks 'nshyt. The male artists were doing better (Usher, Ginuwine, 112, Jagged Edge), but hell even Sisqo & Dru Hill had dropped waaaaay off in a matter of two years- mostly due to Sisqo's overexposure and that flopped second solo album that killed damn near all his momentum. Still, some of the last real good times for R&B before it started becoming :flabbynsick:

you are showing what little you know about rnb.

as rnb is the most cost exorbent/least profitable, lowest selling music industry genre in history.

also,..you are shoeing you do not know history as well.

as aaliyah and timbo/static/missy were both on a two way crossroad street.

as timbo/static/missy were nit estsblished or proven after devante seing prison production writer camps.

plus aaliyah's draw and perception was locked in hell!
from the fiasco of the underage r. kelly statutory rape marriage fiasco.

so both camps aaliyah and the swing prison camp refugees all had to be complimentary to one another and draw.

which did occurr,...when usually the possibility given the circumstances typicall never happened.

if you knew the history you would have never spoken ill about the swing camp.

you are speaking in revision devoid of the facts or times content wise.

Damn. fukk the argument. Just reading this giving me nostalgia. We took R&B for granted. Now all we got is this Euro-Pop trash.

Before that, you can line up those singles, the albums, look at Billboard, and they were neck-and-neck. Aaliyah wasn't as big a mainstream success as Brandy was... [/B]

breh, Monica was always looking up at Aaliyah. This is non-debatable. Brandy only outsold her once in the US, and even then it was only by about a million more.

And as far as smash hits, it's true Aaliyah never had any smash hits. But to me it's not about having the smash hit, but about having the long lasting hits. Between Aaliyah, Monica, and Brandy, it's clear that "The Boy Is Mine" was the biggest thing any of them had ever released. Ask anybody if they'd still listen to that track on a regular basis today and you'd most likely get a . I been listening to Aaliyah tracks all day and :whew: you don't get tired of them ever

Aaliyah's last album was selling better than Brandy's & Monica's 3rd album. In terms of sales of their 3rd albums, it went Aaliyah>>Monica>>Brandy. Aaliyah was always a slow seller. Her first two albums peaked at like the bottom 20 of the chart but still managed to sell millions. With that last album, it debuted in the TOP 5 and went Gold a few weeks later. Yeah, that first single bombed, but Rock Da Boat was getting huge radio play, which is why she was rushed to the bahamas to shoot that video. The album slid down the charts, but that week before she died, the album actually was moving UP the charts.

Monica managed to do okay in the 2000's, Brandy was the one that was really struggling to keep up.

Brandy was the bigger star, but Aaliyah had a more CONSISTENT career. And Monica and Aaliyah would just alternate for that # 2 spot.

No disrespect, but Aaliyah = Ciara = Ashanti = a bunch of other decent R&B acts that arent really legends or GOATs. Only difference is she died on top and tragically.

This quote would make sense, but Ciara and Ashanti were just Aaliyah wannabes. Aaliyah was definetly a legend, her influence on r & b culture isn't debateable. She wasn't no MJ, but she definetly made her impact. She was already getting co-signed by Janet and Whitney, before she died.

I swear every Aaliyah thread goes the same way. I feel like people get too caught up with others overrating her because of her death that they downplay her talent and act like she was just some run of the mill artist.

For one, I don't get why people discredit Aaliyah because of Timbo and Missy's production as if Beyonce is some mega producer and doesn't have a team churning out hits as well. All of these artists do. Look how many others they produced for and they may have had a hit but they came and went in the wind. All three of them were necessary for those great songs and that chemistry is rare which is a credit to all three.

It's weird because you may look at Beyonce and feel she blows Aaliyah out the water as far as vocals and showmanship but Aaliyah just had those intangibles that make her a star and made it look effortless even at 15,16. And most importantly her music is undeniably :ohlawd: YEARS later. I'm not sure I can say that about Beyonce. With the exception of Me, myself and I

But "I care 4 u"???....:wow:

Before she died, I always felt that Rock the Boat should've been her lead single. Then I went through a phase when I hated it...I think I blamed that song on her death.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I thought We Need A Resolution was a banger...just thought Rock The Boat was gonna be the more commercially accepted song (and it was)
