a bigger overall string of hits?
Brandy didn't have a string of hits on this calibre until she dropped her second album which was led by a duet with Monica. No one can deny the impact of "The Boy Is Mine" when it dropped, and both Brandy and Monica both benefited huge from it. But between them, But you can't compare any "Brandy" singles with Aaliyah's rendition of "At Your Best." It's funny, I did a google search looking for opening week sales and found this quote on Brandy's self-titled debut
More than anyone else mentioned in the thread, she had lasting material. The fact that nikkas will go 20 years and still WANT to listen to shyt Aaliyah released in her first two albums is something you probably can't say about Brandy or Monica (but you definitely can't say about Beyonce)
the 1st paragraph is the bullchit you said.
we're gonna act like "wanna be down" & "brokenhearted" werent HUGE? we're gonna act like "sittin up in my room" & "baby" werent smashes? "best friend" was the smallest hit out of that run, and it was bigger than most of aalyiah's chit.most of monica's joints were bigger than aalyiah's stuff as well. the f**k was you at?

i quoted the bolded for sheer enjoyment.

both of these chicks are wildly overrated.
Beyonce makes music for teenagers. Its all generally awful stuff that wont stand the test of time. But she has a great voice.
Aaliyah made better music and had better song writers. Her stuff could be bubblegum but it could also be more mature. Her vocal range was limited as fukk, but she knew that and did not do more.
Kind of a wash to me.![]()
its counter-productive to say that beyonce makes music for teenagers, when most of her stuff is still more mature than aalyiah's chit.
So... let's also pretend none of those sales and praise have anything to do with her being deceased.
Not saying ALL OF IT is a result of that, but I'm willing to be that both of her first two albums have sold at least an extra million in the wake of her death.
I don't know how this go-hard discrediting of Monica's stardom happened, but there's a reason 'The Boy Is Mine' was a huge deal. Aside from the song itself, a major part of that song's draw was that it was Brandy and Monica on the same song. Let's not act like Monica was some R&B girl that was only hot on urban radio or some shyt- she had just as many top 10 Hot 100 hits just like Brandy and Aaliyah did... look it up.
I mean, no dis to Aaliyah, seriously. She made great music... but some of y'all in this thread like any young female R&B singer owes her career and had to bow at the feet of the immortal Aaliyah, and I don't recall it being like that at all. She was definitely at the top, but it's not like her existence was stopping everybody else in their tracks.
took the words right out of my mouth.
i didnt feel like arguing about sales with these dudes so i just let them have it. i wasnt trying to look up specificly dated numbers to prove a moot point. but when i used to hit the racks @ the book store, i seriously dont remember aalyiah putting up brandy or monica numbers in billboard magazine. i do remember her old albums re-appearing on billboard for the 1st time in years right after she passed.

about the songs themselves. They were like that about her singing but I don't think people were really pining for Monica like that...and it showed in her sales clearly. She couldn't even bank off of The Boy Is Mine even though that's what she named her album. She should've eaten much better off of that single.
