I like to think its just being realistic. No reason to go to hard, this 2015 re-up has been in the works since the Melo deal (one reason I'm glad Melo stayed). Its just 1 more season and the knicks will be legit contenders. But this year isn't the knicks year.

This year the goal should be getting the team accustomed to the triangle, so when they do get a Max FA they can look to plug him into a system. Secondarily it should be based on getting some of the knicks yutes on their rookie contracts to produce. It shouldn't be based on trying to get wins for a late pick and a second round appearance.

If the knicks can do that I think they are a legit title threat 2015 until the Melo deal goes out.

who are the overwhelming favorites in the east? since you're looking so grimly on the knicks chances ..

its not that their are overwhelming favorites its the fact the knicks have to learn the triangle and their front court is shaky at best. Not to mention the knicks need to revamp their defense (I hope) all under a rookie coach. I mean I think the knicks can make the playoffs this year if they want to, but the more I think about it the more I got to question why? Even if the knicks come out the East they still wouldn't be able to likely beat one of the top Western teams.

Why go hard and play Melo into the ground when you can train the yutes, institute the triangle, get a good pick in what is suppose to be a great Big Man draft, and then get another Max FA and legitimately have a shot at winning a championship.

If you think about where the knicks are going to be in 2,3,4,5 years maybe taking a step back this year to make sure the Triangle is instituted correctly (while getting a better pick for it) before leaping forward to trying to be the best team in the east is the smart thing to do. From a lot of what I've read in the media I think thats the organizations plan.

Hell they hired two guys who worked on the thunder development staff alongside guys who know the triangle. I think that says a lot about where this knicks regime plans to go.

I see Indiana taking a huge step back this upcoming season....I can see the Knicks realistically as a 6th seed team right now.
