That's not "toxic masculinity" it's bad parenting usually rooted in neglect. You run around parroting this "can you define masculinity" question when you don't know what masculinity is yourself.

Can you define masculinity?

I like to divide masculinity into to parts.

Masculinity that exists naturally in nature and can be seen physically.

And then there's Masculinity that is defined by Culture.

You need to sit down. This is straight Gospel. From Nietzche to Iron John to the Hagakure. :blessed: drink it in, friendo. Bask in its warm glowing warming glow.:blessed:
:scust: Forgot you were one of those "I'm not gonna open a door for her - toxic femininity" emotionless types.

Can you Brotha Matt? You can't say what is toxic without saying what is not when it comes to these things.

I can't define masculinity, I thought I could once upon a time until those ideas were challenged and I realized that masculinity doesn't have a real definition, something that's observable everytime someone here attempts to define it. The answers are all over the place and are usually qualities that can be attributed to both men and women.

But I think it's safe to say that a father telling his son to "man up" and perform masculinity by concealing his emotions is in fact toxic.

Can you define masculinity?
Strong characteristics and behavior associated with adult males.
Masculinity and femininity are social constructs. How they are defined is bound to change. What was seen as masculine or feminine 300 years ago or centuries ago may be different today. At one point, it was masculine for men to wear skirts and feminine for men to wear pants.

A Brief History of Men, Dresses, and Masculinity: An Essay
This is a bullshyt argument. Kilts and kimonos aren't skirts or dresses and even in the cultures where men wore those items of clothing, there was still a distinction between how men and women dressed. There was still a distinction between how men and women were expected to behave in those societies. Sure the idea of what it is to be masculine can have some variances depending on what society you're talking about but the point is that masculinity is ultimately based on behavior generally inherent to males just like femininity is based on behavior generally inherent to females. You have no point.
