Thats the thing with rap though. It evolves and changes in ways quite dramatic and often quick so what was cutting edge can be all belt, no onion by next season.

Metal and many other genres don't really have that issue to contend with. That and Hip Hop, like Camron, doesn't respect its elders.

Think that may start to flip over the next few generations but a lot of the artform was built on innovation and whos got next so a short memory span is par for the course...
Disagree, and I say this as a non-metal listening person (just notice my screen name), I say this as someone who grew up watching VH1 a ton...

Metal/Rock has changed in so many dramatic ways that it has destroyed musician's careers.

From 70s power rock/stadium rock to new wave of british heavy metal, glam/bubble gum/Sunset Strip metal, thrash metal/speed metal, death metal, grunge, alternative, nu metal. Metal has about a thousand subgenres. The change from hair metal/thrash in the late 80s to grunge in the early 90s was so dramatic that it destroyed all those bands careers.

Crazy guitar players like Warren DeMartini and Vito Bratta went from having full blown careers in the 80s to working in laundromats in the 90s.

True but you could take a metal track from the 80s, 00s and 20s and there would be far more in common than rap tunes from the same times, yes? Nothing is stagnant, there is always flux and growth but Hip Hop is such a thing that tends not to build upon but destroy the previous to create the next and the leaps can be quite immense.

I do agree that Grunge was the metal equivalent of the 93 gangsta wave. Funny how that trend popped off in different niches, isn't it?

Metal in the 80s, 90s, and 00s dramatically changed in sound, its not as common as you think it is.

80s = standard tuning, solos, effects
90s = the emergence of drop tuning, no solos
00s = alternate tuning, 7 and 8 string guitars, baritone guitars, djent

My point is metal has drastically changed over the years. :manny:

Grunge was inevitable considering Metallica dropped off so hard. Don't get me wrong...my initial post seemed to be big upping mustaine but after Friedman left they also took a plunge in quality. Thankfully it was short lived...if only helmet got.popular instead of Nirvana

Besides electronic it has the most sub genres. One band usually defines the era and the rest fall in line

Metallica is goat level with a dedicated Fanbase. This is not surprising at all. Stop throwing our legends away and do them like Waite people do theirs

Ehhhh.....let's just call them a legacy act with a dedicated enough fan base to keep selling merch/tickets with a catalogue that's deep (pause) to be worth the price of admission to see.

One could argue that they haven't out on anything good in well over a decade according to which camp you stand in, be it the Thrash metal camp or the hard Rock route they went after they cut their hair.

Plus, they gain new fans simply by word of mouth and media presence. That run on Stranger things had all kind of teen cacs rushing to buy ticket, albums, merch and shyt off one goofy written character.

If only the same would happen to black youth in regards to hearing about public enemy, NWA and Wu Tang instead of aging them out due to this erroneously used term that trends called "irrelevance".

:what: Stop cutting and pasting haterade from “true fans” stuck in the 80s. Anyone claiming Metallica hasn’t had a good album since Mustaine and Cliff and calling Kirk Hammett a trash guitarist IS A fukkING LIAR.

I wouldn't even say he's cutting and pasting. Alot of people refuse to let Metallica evolve into anything else past the Cliff Burton era and I must admit, it was nice while it lasted and he truly had a huge impact on the way their songs were made being well versed in music structure and all.

Couple that with Dave's early guitar work they practically stole before kicking him out the band for beating Hetfield's weak ass up and you've got their early success being so heralded that anything outside of their two driving forces (Burton and Mustaine) just sounded like ahit they didn't want to accept.

And this is coming from a dude who liked Metallica from inception up to St Anger which has some alright tunes.
