Microsoft: Kinect costs almost as Xbox One to make | BGR
The employee basically explains why the Kinect isn't optional. i think its pretty clear now that Microsoft won't renege on the Kinect pack in like they did on the DRM and that they consider it to basically be part of the Xbox One.

i've seen estimates that Sony is coming close to selling the PS4 at cost. Microsoft has to be losing at least $100 per Xbox One sold. they're probably losing more.

that's a huge loss to take and a decent chunk of marketshare to give up for something your core fans likely don't want or care about and something the casuals obviously aren't gonna be willing to pay the premium for.

Xbox Won: More for your Money :yeshrug:

Meanwhile Sony is gonna pedal some half assed 60 buck Kinect knock off that will never be supported because nobody will have one
i don't think anybody is gonna feel at a loss that the PSEye isn't fully supported because most of us don't care about a camera on a console. let's go a step further. most of us don't want either camera and won't buy it. there i virtually nothing done with a camera on a console or with motion controls in general that isn't just a gimmick.

just because Microsoft is forcing it on us doesn't mean we plan to use it.

A large number of people never wanted to move from a-traks to cassette players, or from cassette players to CD's, hell even a lot of people thought HD TV's were excessive :russ:

There's always a segment of people who don't want technology to move forward, yet it always does. Kinect is the future of gaming, either you get down or you lay down, history has already shown this.

Just like Xbox dictated the future of online gaming and Sony followed their lead a generation late, expect the PS5 to have a built in Kinect like imitation, that is if they even survive this next gen. This is the direction gaming has been heading for years it is inevitable

You can't compare the tangible progression of technological formats to a tacked on gimmick such as the Xbox Live. A CD improved how we listened to music, an HDTV improved how we watched TV etc. Has the Kinect improved the way we play video games? Sure, Zumba and the dance games have their fanbase but you'll never see a COD fan or Madden fan say that the Kinect improves the way they play video games.

Kinect is the tangible progression of all input devices. Eventually buttons and controllers will be irrelevant. Probably not in this oncoming generation but the shift already started with the Wii. This is the natural evolution of gaming / controlling your everyday devices....which is why Sony will lose this next generation as well by being so limited in their scope

:scusthov: You are going to need a LOT more people who even like the Kinect in the first place to get it to the "future of gaming" level. It's an add on device that Microsoft is trying to turn into more than a one trick pony. I don't think Microsoft should have made this a mandatory part of the new system. They losing money just adding it to the system. But we will see, but I think the Kinect is just another Powerglove.

Hi Winb, remember that conversation we had about the Wii a few years back. Remember how I called it a gimmick and gamers would see that then abandon it
And that the Wii-U would be a dead console 2yrs after the XB1 launched if not sooner? DO YOU REMEMBER :mj:

Kinect for "gaming" is basically what the Wii was capable of doing. It can do a lot more, but its in the same universe of the types of things when talking about motion controls. Kinect is much more than motion controls which is why you don't even understand Kinect. It was never NOT gonna be apart of the system, why would you think otherwise? Because some fanboy on a forum said "I think they should do this/that"? There is nothing new to discuss here, even this threads topic because I covered this in another thread already :manny: But to answer your questions, Kinect will basically let you interact with your console in the same way Master Chief interacts with Cortana :leon: And they'll actually take it that extra step in 2014 when they introduce those augmented reality glasses. Think about what I just said for a second. Look it up if you want, Fortaleza glasses :lawd:
But before we take that epic step into the 21st and a 1/2 centrury, just being able to fully interact with your console via voice will the the standard for all gaming consoles FOREVER after XB1 hits. I get it, you don't care. I get it too, you don't understand why YOU WILL CARE. Once you get it into your hands, and you see it for yourself? This topic will be looked back on and you will feel so stupid about it :lolbron:

Tell me, you still think the Xbox360 will not surpass the Wii when its all said and done?

My dude I understand you have a console of choice, But when you just walking around with rose colored glasses spouting off Bullshyt the bold section you need to be called on it.

The immediacy and convenience of buttons will not be surpass for a long long while if ever.

Kinect is a gimmick control system that lacks the accuracy and precision to control games that are anything beyond a tech demo. do you think a game like Grand Theft Auto 5 can be fully played with Kinect and no conventional controller? a game like Skyrim?

Kinect is for dumbed down racing and dance games or bullshyt fitness games for people who think they're savvy but can't just go for a jog or lift weights or lastly party style mini game compilations that involve hitting balls. honestly if that's the future of gaming i want out.

Bullshyt. Kinect 2.0 does not have the inputs needed to progres gaming. Because games with complex commands dominate the market, motion controllers no matter how accurate they are, will never shed the label of niche.

show me how one plays Grand Theft Auto 5 or Assassin's Creed IV with a Kinect. maybe you can do some voice commands but its just not enough of a controller or interface device to let you play real games.

Kinect games have to be built around its limited interface. they have to be engineered to be played in a manor that lacks precision because failing around in your living room and trying to make that 1 to 1 with a intricate video game environment won't work.

its kinda ironic that Microsoft and Sony attempted to adopt motion controls to respond to Nintendo who figured out that the interface is so limited you can't do much more with it beyond those borderline tech demos they turned into half baked games. the Wii U mainly has the Wii's controls for backwards compatibility reasons and moved in a different direction.

Kinect should be s different system targeted at a different audience and not tethered to the Xbox. if they built a stand alone Kinect box and sole Kinect games for it they could cut the cost and maximize the profit. instead they want to strap it onto the Xbox and damage that brand and drive up the price of both.
