Black people's mentalities are better than 20 years ago because that hood shyt held a generation of black people back with that "keep it real" nonsense that made caricatures of our culture. "Knowledge of Self" was there back in the day, but those dudes were undermined, like Sharif from Menace II Society.

The record labels want to phase the hood out. It used to be a lot of hood acts and artists selling units and having a radio presence, but you stopped seeing those type of artists selling units or getting pushed by the record companies, unless they had a sellout radio single targeting cacs. EPMD was going gold without all guns and dope music, just hood content, that stopped being able to happen in the early 2000's. The streets didn't pay enough attention to what was going on back then, and it's only gotten worse, with more weirdo rappers and outright cac hipsters.
