There was a notable drop off on Infamy, when he was really sick with sickle cell. And then after that he just made a decision to change his rhyme style to more of a spoken word type flow. Way slower, and way more conversational, and less strict rhyming conventions. Expanded subject matter as well, diving deeper into conspiracy theory stuff and spirituality.

If you don't like it as much, that's fine. But a lot of people frame it to this day that P was trying to rhyme like he used to, but just couldn't do it. When the reality is he deliberately made a change to his rhyme style. He spoke on this several times during the 2010's.

One of the few artists to make a change fairly deep into their career, and it always bugged me that a lot of folks didn't understand that (love it or hate it) it was on purpose.

I heard him say that too. But I didn't believe him.

Why didn't you believe him? I feel like P would be the type of person to just say he couldn't rap like that anymore if he was still trying to but couldn't do it.

It sounds super obvious. The style is literally so different that it can't be an accident IMO. It was such a pivot.

Would have been nice to have him actually do a throwback to his old style, just to show he can do it.

Because the other way sounds so much better. Why wouldn't you stick with it? And he never tried rhyming that way ever again, just to show people it was his decision.

I never thought it sounded wayyyy better. I do prefer his older shyt, but his later style was dope af and crazy original, and sounded totally unique. He didn't have to prove shyt to anybody, and didn't owe anyone anything. Why would he force himself to do some shyt he didn't want to do just to please the 100 people in the back row that would hate on it anyways and call it a fluke, or just say that he got lucky or some goofy shyt like that. People are impossible to please. Just gotta stay true to yourself.

It's not exactly the same but he still had tracks like this where he snapped and blacked out. @MisterMajesty tagging you too. Not exactly the same, but he had tracks like this where he still spazzed out.

SINY!!
Havoc showed out. He still got it. Off the first few listens (especially in the ESL studio system in my car) it slaps!!!

If this is the last Mobb Deep album (I believe it is) then this is a fitting conclusion.

Down the road I am looking forward to the Method Man & Havoc project and possibly P’s The Book of The Dead if all parties involved can agree to a release.

yeah, I heard 4 songs and turned it off. Those mfers were fire. I'm gonna take a long drive tomorrow and listen to the whole album because I know it's hot.
I listened to the first 3, then turned it off. I was feeling it. I'm gonna do the same, since I'm driving to Bmore tomorrow.

Pretty Toney Album is 4-4.5 mics easy. Most people couldn't get over Tush (listen to it now... it's not a Ghostface record, but it's a good record). That said, some of Ghost's best songs are on that album.

No album with Run, Keisha's House, Biscuits (Top 5 True Master beat... @ me if you want), Holla, Love and Ghostface can be considered "just above average."

Hell, Tooken Back is one of my favorite Ghost songs. But again, most people couldnt get over the Jacki O feature... irony being she absolutely annihilated that verse.
Tooken Back is so underrated. Jacki O murdered that ish.

I have Pretty Tony as a 4 mic on the old scale. I don't like Tush, but it fits the vibe of the album. I actually think Love is one of the out of place tracks as well, but it fits the vibe as well. I like Big Doe Rehab too, and that's a 4, as well. But Ghost was batting 4.5-5 until then, so these were steps below.

Yep He def could rap that way if he wanted too, when he came home from jail healthy and did the tour, he was sounding just fine live rapping the old shyt. I could see if he was an older cat that always rapped at a high BPM in his younger day but that's not the case. If there is a lyrical fall off it either involves writing less, an increase/or decrease in drug use or laziness. Delivery change either by choice or physical limitation IMO.

I believe P had the physical issues, got it rectified but decided to stay in those pockets/got comfortable with it. He did enough with the live shows and occasionally flipping the switch on certain records to prove he could spit the old way if he wanted.

That's in regard to Delivery. Lyrically P never fell off to me, just rapped differently and applied the content to that.

Just my opinion though :manny:

Ehhhh idk if he had that energy in him tbh. Why go from a top 5-10 MC at your peak to spoken word unless you had to.

Martin Scorsese probably thinks he has another goodfellas in him but history says otherwise.

Jordan on the wizards would probably never admit his playing still was different than it was in 98

I learned to enjoy what P became but the 1995-HNIC P is my favorite rapper all time
