I thought the whole point of playing 82 (72 in this case) was to stratify who the best teams are, over a large enough sample size.If literally your only goal is to "get the best performing teams in the playoffs", then yes, a late mini-tournament has a better chance of doing that because that way the hotter team at the end of the season gets in rather than some team with a big injury or coasting on early-season performance.
Just look at the NCAA: play-in teams have above-average success (UCLA went from being a play-in team to making the Final Four this year, and VCU did it too before that, plus La Salle, Tennesee, and Syracuse have all gone from play-in to Sweet Sixteen). Play-in teams have a better record in the NCAA than all other 8, 9, 10, or 11 seeds, which is a real-life example proving that if you want the most successful representative, winning a play-in game is a good way to get it.
But of course, that would ignore that "getting the best team" is only a small part of why the play-in game exists, so making that argument is kinda pointless.

I thought the whole point of playing 82 games (72 in this case) is because basketball is a game with a large amount of variance.
So having a 1 or 2 game play-in is a direct slap-in-the-face of both of those pillars of how the NBA has seemingly been structured since inception.
Also, all of NCAA is 1 single game advancement. NBA playoffs are played in series. So play-in fits right in with a Single Elimination NCAA tournament. It is a stark contrast to how the NBA handles it’s postseason...
This is also a big issue in baseball. Lots of people don’t think the play-in game belongs, and if it does, perhaps it should be a series instead of just 1 game.
But yes, something something conference. Something something 1981. Win the games. Win your conference. Got it.

The 82 games are literally played for seeding purposes for the playoffs... So yes, it’s done for sample size purposes and finding out who the best and most deserving teams of postseason play are.You don't realize that the whole point of playing 82 games is to get 82 games of revenue from paying fans?
It don't have shyt to do with "large enough sample size", it's about cutting the fukking checks and nothing else.
Breh why are you even having this argument?![]()

So you don’t end up with an OKC Thunder vs Minnesota Timberwolves playoff series...
Did they monetize the fukk out of 82 games after-the-fact? Sure. Did it probably get up to 82 games for monetary reasons? Sure.
The overall point is that they play a LOT of games to determine who the best teams are. And then you boil it down to just 1 or 2 isolated games. That neither fits in with the regular season grind nor the playoff series format.
You’re right. I’m not sure why I keep having this argument with somebody who has never ending straw man up their sleeve
The honest truth is, I was responding to you because you were quoting me repeatedly. No, the 82 games are literally played for revenue. There's no "after the fact" about it, the players and owners negotiate the # of games solely to determine revenue vs. workload, not out of some deep desire to maintain the nobility and integrity of the game.
I didn't ask why you're having the argument with me. I'm asking why you're having the argument AT ALL. You're literally just bytching for the sake of bytching. It can't possibly be fun for you, it can't possibly change anything, it's not interesting or entertaining, it has nothing to do with the actual game of basketball we enjoy, it's just a grown man pre-emptively whining because the man-child he stans may be about to choke and not even make it into the 1st round.

The honest truth is, I was responding to you because you were quoting me repeatedly.
That’s what people tend to do on message boards...
Quote people repeatedly and then be bewildered why they respond to you, brehs. Do you do this regularly on this forum?
And after admitting that the Mavs aren’t real contenders and I’d be surprised if they advanced past the first round, your last half of that final paragraph reads like some really emotional ad hominem outburst.
You good?![]()

Yes, I posted my thoughts about the matter. How could I quote you on the subject if you weren't already whining about it first?
Fail logic brehs.![]()
Nah, you made your argument before I even stepped in. And it was already whiny as fukk.Yes, I posted my thoughts about the matter.
In a thread. On a message board.
It wasn’t an argument until YOU decided to start quoting me. Beginning an argument. Between two people.
I hope this post helps you understand.
You literally keep quoting me.Nah, you made your argument before I even stepped in. And it was already whiny as fukk.

How much energy you gonna keep expending on this quest?
You literally keep quoting me.
You go on a diatribe about how pointless all of this is, yet you seem more invested than anybody else in here.
You’re copying and pasting from the dictionary to prove your 18th different point in this thread.
But you want to know how much energy I’m going to continue to waste.

You asked me why I am “having an argument,” not “making an argument.”Nah, you made your argument before I even stepped in. And it was already whiny as fukk.

As it continues you realize the little brat just enjoys the sound of his own voice

Luka is 22 years old and hasn’t been past the first round. What does he need to pace himself for?Nah. A lot of you are being intentionally obtuse about this like multiple faces of the league don’t sit out routinely and try to rest for certain stretches and be prepared for playoffs.
Try telling guys like Bron, Kawhi, and KD (the last 5 Finals MVPs...) that “it’s only 3 games, suck it up.”
It’s fine when Coli’s favorite players need rest and to pace themselves. When it’s a guy you guys don’t like, fukk em, it’s just a couple games, don’t be p*ssy.

You’re putting him in the same category as 10+ year veterans with multiple rings. The guys you mentioned haven’t said a word about the play in game because they don’t have to worry about it.
