I don't think a star player really switched teams purely based on market since Shaq in 1996. Chris Bosh is plausible but I'm of the belief that he, Wade and Bron decided to join up at the 08 Olympics. It's money first and organization second.

im also talking about pre internet. when where you were was "more important" because the world wasn't as small and accessible.
over the past 20 years since Shaq, who were the biggest stars to switch through pure FA?
There have also been guys that have forced trades to go to bigger markets before they become free agents such as Melo, CP3, and Dwight. Those guys would have bolted if they would have entered free agency. If Bron never went back to CLE, Kevin Love would have too.

Might not be entirely true that they don't necessarily go to the big markets but free agents damn sure aint signing up to play in Milwaukee Minnesota or Utah either. Most of the time they go where the money is and that is usually the team that drafted them.
