Ghostface says he’s not on the album. Don’t know for sure if Kendrick will or won’t be on it. I’d LOVE to hear Nas and Jay on a Premo beat would be the ultimate flex for both of all three of them.

To be fair hi-hats have been out in the neo-boom bap scene for a long time. Every now and then Alc and some of these guys do use them, but they’ve been out for a while. One of the big signature elements of boom bap the last ten years is no hi-hats or minimal ones.

In premier’s case specifically I think the lack of hi-hats does hurt him more because with his chop heavy style and all the empty space he frequently leaves in the beats, it really does feel like a big piece is missing

I hear you.

Ok this makes sense. His beats lately definitely feel like something is missing in them.

Yeah man it's crazy you don'y always notice hi-hats until they aren't there. A producer friend of mine that knows way more about engineering and sounds told me too that Preemo switched his beatmaking hardware / sampler a while back, and that the type of MPC he switched to sounds thinner and less warm/thick/full than his previous machine.

And that could be another reason, because I literally feel like Preemo isn't doing anything that different than what he did in the 00's or even the 10's, and yet his beats just don't sound as soulful and lifelike. They sound more sterile, and not even the sample choices or whatever. Just the actual mix or the sound itself. I think he switched sound engineers as well.

It's weird. I can't put my finger in it. Same type samples. Same type drums. Same type sample chops and loops. Same formula, but the final product doesn't sound nearly the same.

Nervous about this Nas album. They gotta knock this out the park.

I'm curious to why did he do that ? He must know that his beats don't hit the same. No one dares to tell him that ?
