The reason you have a union is to collectively bargain for contractual terms. Doesnt matter how many players are on a team, the players can still bargain for more pay and rid themselves of slave contracts.

nah. all negotiations are about leverage. NBA players have more leverage than NFL players because they have more options. and even with that leverage, it's still not as much as the owners. they have the most and prove it in every negotiation. with the 2005 CBA salaries were capped at 57% of basketball related income (BRI). in the 2011 negotiations, the owners knocked the players down to a range of 49-51% of BRI. a union is only as strong as its weakest links and the NBA has quite a few of them, it's just that NFL has more of them and it has nothing to do with smarts, it's about structure.
