Superstar
When are going to stop pretending all the best players either skipping college or playing in Europe has hurt both the NCAAs and NBA popularity
Brands matter.Teams really affect the numbers, World Series between Rangers and Arizona was 9 million, Dodgers and Yankees 15 million
Agreed. I keep telling people that who say things like "All they need is another star" or claiming that certain cities aren't free agent destinations and whatnot. I'm like all that sh*t is dead. Big markets can't even star chase because true stars are dwindling, rare to find and create, or they if they are a legit star, most never even reach unrestricted free agent status. They're locked in to max deals and it takes a big "gut your team" trade to acquire them.there's not enough star power in the league. Why everyone runs from this reality is crazy. Those days might be over because the league is incapable of producing even a Caitlin Clark-esque figure.
To make it worse, there's a GENERATIONAL superstar in the draft every year, which cheapens the word.
The NBA is witnessing the carnage they set up by convincing basketball fans that only 5-6 teams are worth your time. Now, it works internationally, but internationally, whether it's soccer or basketball, only a handful of teams are worth your time too, so they're used to that. We tend to tune shyt out when our team is out.
None of these youngins aee appealing to y'all now that y'all know so much about them.
They could favor Lakers/Knicks/Celtics promotion wise, but on the court the big markets aren't head and shoulders above everyone else in talent. Problem is this new CBA has everybody handcuffed. You could put the Lakers on national TV twice a week but they still could get rolled up in the first round if they can't figure out a decent roster to surround Luka with. And they can't spend away and there's no star unrestricted free agents to poach anymore. Its a completely different league and restrictions now.Bingo.
ESPN is going to complain about small market teams and want Silver to "favor" Lakers/Knicks/Celtics over everyone else.
NFL has already shown that the small market shyt doesn't really matter if you do it right. It's more about the brand than the location.
The thing is, the league will have to start marketing this new starless/no story-lines for casuals league. Bron, Curry, KD are having their curtain call and the new guys don't want to be "the guy", have off court issues, or they don't appeal and reel in casual fans like the 2010 generation did. They have to figure it out. This might be how the league looks moving forward.Well, look, this Finals features two teams who aren't mainstream with players that isn't very popular or well-known to the masses, so it gives certain people, especially casuals, a reason not to watch because there's nobody “important” playing right now.
By “important,” I mean no notable players or NBA teams. SGA might be MVP, but he's still relatively unknown, or rather not popular enough to draw interest, he's got some years to go before he reaches that level, his teammates (Chet, J-Dub, Dort, etc) are great but they're nobodies, and for dayum sure ain't nobody on the Pacers either big time in terms of importance or notoriety.
Obviously, for us die-hard basketball fans, it doesn't matter we'll enjoy it anyway. I've said it a few times already, but this is the most random NBA Finals in decades, and that's a nightmare for casual viewers because there are no stories to follow or anyone to root for, I mean Indy could win their first but it's like I said in the last paragraph, they ain't important or notable to the average casual.
