Just got done watching it.
Basically it wasn’t even Netflix that did them in and had they bought Netflix when they could it would have never became what it became. It was still just a mail on demand service then.
Their business model simply became outdated and they were too deep into it. They lost a lot of $ with the “no late fees” promo. Then the financial crash happened and Lehman Bros. went bankrupt and they sold to Dish. This was the nail in the coffin with streaming coming up and then not having the $ or expertise to pivot.
Overall, a lot of romanticization done. Yeah it was cool that it was an experience going physically and more “social” and people remember the smell of the store and click of the VHS box.
But streaming services beats them in every way especially with their original content and it’s still a social experience just in a different way.
Looking for shyt alphabetically, facing late fees and rewind fees, weak or repetitive selections, having to go physically nah I get the nostalgia but that shyt ain’t wavy like that
