it's more sinister than just paying for your own performance. Basically the NFL is saying they deserve compensation for the exposure you'll be getting from performing at halftime.

To be honest the only time Super Bowl ratings decline its at halftime. NFL ain't dumb and No artist is bigger than the league. If ya don't wanna pay for play, you aint performing. And as BIG and world renown as these stars are, they will never be more popular than the league.
