If you want your child to read, find him a subject he likes. For me it was animals and dinosaurs.
I started out as a kid looking at the pictures but eventually you want more so you start playing with the words. Before you know it you'll be reading the words because you want to. Had me with a very advanced vocabulary.
So find WHATEVER it is that interests your child and give them those books.

It's funny cuz when I watch Youtube video essays from Gen z creators epeciaallu ones who are under 20 yrs old, they sometimes mispronounce words even though they are clearly smart people. Guess that has to do with the shift from phonics based learning.

Mind you, the middle school I went to CLOSED due to low academic performance and the High School I went to was on the verse of closing for the same reason!
I HEARD about this but never actually seen it happen. I always assumed it was some Gen X shyt as generally Gen X'ers are stupid AF but I'm a millennial.
I went to public school in NYC BTW, born in the early 90s.

I used to hate getting called on in class too but mainly because it put you on the spot.
But I could read and read well… used to try to read fast to get it over with.
But there was definitely dudes/females in the class like this. I never thought about it, just that these nikkas can’t read out loud for shyt…
Never thought we would be sharing the civilian world with these people where reading is fundamentally important

People give up on boys (men) easier than girls and in turn they tend to give up caring about there education easier, any chick I met that was "dumb" was usually late high school years or older
I have a bit more grace now for people who struggle with reading (especially those with tough home lives and undiagnosed dyslexia) but reading time was always vindication time. 
I got picked on in elementary school, and the same people who did always read like they were two grades behind. It was frustrating though, because I could breeze through a paragraph in little over a minute while the dude who made fun of my Saucony's is struggling for five minutes trying to pronounce the word "remembered".
