"Profitable" in probably less than $80 made per console sale. When you factor in advertising, shipping, R&D, etc. that amounts to not very much or even a loss.The PS4 console was profitable day one for Sony launched a year later and has sold over 50 million.

their strategy works for them.I think the line of thinking here is Nintendo can pass on all these gimmicks they try and develop a system that isn't top of the line (because the XBO and PS4 also aren't by design) and still keep up with their competitors. Instead Nintendo deliberately develops these themed gimmick consoles where if the gimmick takes off you have a Wii situation and if it doesn't you have a Wii U.
