The Wii is really the only time they managed to do that after rescuing the western home console industry in the mid-80s. Very few Wii owners from that group went on to buy a WiiU, for whatever reasons.
cause they named it wrong.

Older generations who bought the Wii to play with it for themselves as well as with their children really helped propel sales for the Wii. The motion controls and Wii Sports and dance games made it more successful than Sony and Microsoft's consoles.

The Wii-U could've continued capitlizing on this if only they had changed its name to something different and advertised it more clearly. Just the name itself was a royal fukk up. 3 years ago my mom wanted to get a Wii to play Zumba I asked her to get the Wii-U instead, she came back with the Wii, I was mad af cause I wanted to play Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge. She said oh well they both play Zumba its the same thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if that same demographic will think Switch is the successor to the first Wii, sales would be high af.

I think that definitely had a lot to do with it. I was confused about what it even was when I read into it a while ago—a lot of people had some great ideas for the name of a new console from Nintendo, and WiiU was probably the worst thing they could have gone with. The marketing for the console in general was just terrible. They totally misrepresented themselves and wasted a pretty good opportunity.

If a person of above-average intelligence could get confused imagine the confusion of everyone else. It was probably so confusing they probably forgot about it the next minute cause it didn't make any sense and assumed it was the same thing, just a different color 'Oh there's a Black colored Wii! That's nice. I'll stick with the old White one.

Of course, it turned out to be a good console with a decent launch lineup that was more powerful than what was out at the time. It probably didn't prompt Sony and Microsoft to develop their next generation consoles (I'd be willing to bet they had those in the oven before the WiiU announcement) but it did give them a bit of a time limit to get those out, since they both got roundly trounced by Wii sales.

I honestly hope Nintendo learns from their marketing mistakes this time around and gets something out that can capture new third parties, maybe even groom them into powerful second parties by the gen's end, but who knows. The only people who are really good at doing that seems to be Sony.

I'd argue that Zelda games would sell more on another system or a Nintendo console with true third party support.

I've always felt like Zelda is held back by Nintendo's focus on the casuals and children markets. Zelda (and metroid) are very much games that appeals to the hardcore market but that market is no longer willing to buy a Nintendo system just to play those games. Nintendo consoles have ended up being the system parents buy their kids for cheap, but kids don't play Zelda like that.

I agree. Zelda isn't as easy to get into as a mario and would do better on another system with a older audience.

They also just came off a highly profitable year :ehh:

"Profitable" in probably less than $80 made per console sale. When you factor in advertising, shipping, R&D, etc. that amounts to not very much or even a loss.

It was pretty much the most power you can get at a "console price"

their strategy works for them. :manny:
The argument people are presenting here is they could make even more money if they get out of their own way and allow it to happen. Its a logical argument. At the very least Nintendo after the Wii U could have came out with what people consider a traditional console and gave it a shot. They could build a box equal to the PS4 or XBO's specs and sell it at a profit now. What would they have to lose trying that?

Exactly, I mean could it possibly do worst than the wii u?

People have been asking for a hardcore system from nintendo for years now.

People say this a lot. I would definitely buy a Nintendo console if it was as powerful as PS4 and Xbox

ok cool, they make a machine of equal power or greater. With minimal 3rd party support and online support. What are you gonna play? Thats the thing. If they ever get 3rd party support with online play, they could be ok.

That would require bringing their online services up-to-date and probably a shift in their company culture just to accomplish that. With Iwata gone, that's not as likely as we'd hope.

Just blanket courting third parties is something that they can do, at least.

They won't even try. You never get the jobs you don't apply for. Nintendo should really just give it a shot. They've tried dumber ideas like the Wii U gamepad.
