The minimum wage in Oregon right now is 8.95. You think that nickle is going to break a business?
You are right ND is different from NY, but its fukked up that the minimum wage is the same in both states, THE FEDERAL MINIMUM! Nobody can live in NY on the minimum wage. So clearly the federal government has to do something but NY State has no interest in doing the right thing.
Raising it to 9 bucks isnt going to break anyone. It used to give people a fair living wage a long time ago when shyt was still made in the US but now nobody can afford it? Please. The minimum wage should at least keep up with inflation.
The owners dont have to raise shyt. A large pizza was 16 dollars from pizza hut when i was a kid, thats when minimum wage was below the 4 buck mark. Now that shyt is 10 dollars for whatever you want and minimum wage is 7.25. WTF? How is that? Its like that for everything. Nothing has increased in price, if anything the price of goods have gone below what they should in relation to inflation.
Those decisions should be left up to the states. The Federal government doesn't have to do anything. The PEOPLE of New York should elect representatives that will get the job done, because if the gov't gets involved it will hurt much more people nationwide. Obviously states like NY and CA should have higher minimum wages, because of the cost of living.
If you live in the middle of nowhere you may not be able to afford to pay the federal minimum wage.
There are towns that see no money. They are far removed from a highway that would bring in money and traffic, there is nothing there. Yet because somebody in Washington decided something would be good they must comply. That's kinda unfair. Which is why many people in the country don't like that kind of interference.
You may think you are winning brownie points with the public, but people see through it. They see the harm it could cause them.
The prices for goods depends on supply and demand. Sometimes there is a breakthrough in technology and prices fall, because that technology allows companies to produce an overabundance of items. Sometimes it is because companies have found cheaper materials, labor, etc.
It could be a lot of things, but if you increase labor cost prices will rise and companies may lay people off. Companies
will not eat that increase, especially retailers. Manufacturers don't really have to worry since most of them are transitioning overseas anyways. It will affect those who cannot move, gas stations, convenience stores, etc.
