Does that make me a "successful" black male?

Life is good. I got an engineering degree from a top school, I make good money, and am on the verge of making even more. Here are the observations of a young nikka that made it. Mr. Hate Coffee is by no means an expert on life, take it for what you will.

Observations from a "Successful" Black Male

-It's going to be hard to keep the same friends. People will resent you for life decisions they made. Be a stand up guy no matter what tho.

-Even women that make more than you will expect you to pay for the dates.

-No matter how well you're doing, the harsh reality that your high school friends and your immediate family ARE NOT doing well keeps you from being completely free.

-Women want a man with a good job and career, but get mad at you when you're heavily involved with said career and don't have a lot of free time.

-Meeting other young blacks who have money and ambitions changed my whole life. If anyone is stuck in a rut, I suggest you change your friendship circle. It can open your mind.

-Money isn't everything. I had the most stress in my life when I made my most money.

-Nothing turns you into faster than working a desk job.

-White people have different rules when it comes to snitching. Don't tell em shyt. I've seen guys at work stab each other in the back repeatedly and go out for beers and play golf afterwards. I still don't understand this.

-Getting a new job/promotion/degree isn't really going to make you happy. Especially if you're not passionate about your work.

-Owning a house was overrated. Way more upkeep and headaches than I realized. If I could do it again, I'd cop a cheap place to live in and then rent out.


-Our generation is royally getting screwed. All that "Follow Your Dreams" stuff we grew up on has fukked a lot of 20 somethings up. And they're bitter about it.

-Don't assume that someone at work is cool cuz they're black. It's an amazing amount of Toms in the work world.

-Never talk politics or religion with coworkers. Even outside of work.

-You can go back to the hood, but don't get caught up in hood drama.

-Success is relative. There will always be someone younger with more accolades to make you feel like you could do better.

-People from your past will come to you for money. Dont' feel bad saying NO. Just cuz I got bread and no kids doesn't mean I don't have my own problems.

-Journey > the destination. College was harder and I was broke but it was more fulfilling.

-Most women I went to school with were high achievers and very driven. But once they got into the corporate world they realized that having a job is boring and secretly wish someone with more money would come and make them a housewife.

-Generation Y females tend to be ridiculously entitled and will hop from job to job until they find one that makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The truth is, this job doesn't exist for most of us. So they resign to the point above.

-Adults are the most delusional people in this world. The older I get, the harder it is to be honest with folks. You have to manage people's twisted perception of themselves. It keeps the riff raff down.
-Young blacks are some of the most creative people in the world yet incredibility limited at the same time.

-Everybody settles. EVERYBODY. Whether it be on a job or a mate. We all settle. At least I'm honest with myself.
-Chicks be using the shyt out of me. Luckily I see it coming. I get asked to be someone's date to a wedding every other month. So demonic.

-Whenever someone asks what you're doing at a specific time or date, ALWAYS tell them you're doing something important. More often than not they want a favor.

I'm what many would consider a successful black male as well and most of the stuff you said rings true.
he only reason I say that I'm successful is because back in 2012 I bought my grandmother a house when my mom wanted to put her in a home. Being able to do things like that kinda put a chip on my shoulder I guess.
Some of the advice you gave points out that your a bit ahead of me in terms of experience. To provide an example. I just bought my own house last year and I haven't really seen any negatives of either home yet. Plus I haven't made my "most money" to realize it isn't making me happy because this is the highest I've been paid so far.

Some of the other stuff is just common sense and doesn't require "success" to figure out.

This is my second "real" job. About an hour commute working from home 2 days out of the week (hoping for more) life is good at the moment

i dont think blacks are "some" of the most creative people in the world. We are. this isn't a matter of opinion its a fact. every labor saving device that was invented before the 1900s was made by blacks, who were easily taken advantage of, either by their lawyers or by slave owners. its easy to disappear when u dont have a voice.

i had a jealous excoworker go out of his own way to talk negative about a product of mine which i sell. dude didn't realize i was monitoring the site on which he went to do this sh1t until i emailed him with evidence. dude was shook. so yall need to think about this. for a n1gga to go out of his own way to try ot take food out of another man's mouth, that should give you an idea of the evil that resides in the hearts of men.

i've never been the jealous type. i get envious of people at times and i just think "lucky mutherfuccker, i wish i was him" and i move on. other n1ggas see successful n1ggas and it ruins their day. watch your backs folks!

Yup....most of my friends are struggling because they believe follow your dream nonsense and did a bullshyt major.

I have friends like this too, but everyone can't go into IT or be an engineer or anything else math and science oriented. It's unfortunate that people can't choose a major that brings out their strengths without having 2 jobs and barely making it.

There is a problem with the changing your circle of friends thing though: As a black man, once you leave the people you grew up with behind, there is nobody you can trust anymore. Nobody, you can never let your guard down. At the same time, you outgrew your past and there is no way back.

I feel the bolded as a black man who's been trying to make money off of creative exploits for a while...anywho...good thread.

I checked out your links. Youve got some pretty cool music and designs. You live in NY why don't you go outu and network with people? You're in the mecca for creative people, go to art galleries, small warehouse events where they throw EDM parties, mingle and befriend people, its the best way to get in. Trying to promote online is practically useless. There's just too many people, but folks hardly live in NY and have the opportunity to network in such an environment. There's shyt going on literally every day there. Go to all of them. Get known.
