She knew exactly what she was doing when she made those statements. Even if it's a blatant conflict of interest, it'd be hustling backwards for her fellow players to call it out.

She should sit the rest of this one out and step back from talking publicly.

Unrivaled approached the WNBA about being investors in the league ahead of their second round of funding. It’s been reported that the WNBA not only declined but want to include league exclusivity in the upcoming CBA that would prevent the players from playing in other leagues in the offseason.

It should have more than just those two meeting the commissioner as it would haven't prevented all of this she said/she said.

Unrivaled approached the WNBA about being investors in the league ahead of their second round of funding. It’s been reported that the WNBA not only declined but want to include league exclusivity in the upcoming CBA that would prevent the players from playing in other leagues in the offseason.

I still don't believe it's a conflict of interest. There is no exclusivity agreement the players are currently bound to, so after the season is over they are all free to play elsewhere. Playing for Unrivaled is no different than playing overseas.

....of course the WNBA can fix this situation rather quickly by guaranteeing the players a bigger cut of the revenue. Then they would be able to enforce an exclusivity clause and wouldn't have to worry about players going to Unrivaled (or playing overseas).

John Skipper has alluded to the WNBA being hostile/dismissive during negotiations so I don’t doubt the validity of Phee’s comments. The fact that Cathy Englebert hasn’t directly denied the comments kinda backs this up.

I don’t think it’s directly a conflict of interest either since Unrivaled operates during the off-season but Unrivaled pay the players more than their entire WNBA salaries and their marketing of the players is arguably as good as, if not better than the W’s.

"I did not make those comments," Engelbert said at her annual news conference ahead of Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Friday.

"There is a lot of inaccuracy out there through social media and all of this reporting," Engelbert added. "I highly respect the players. There is a lot of emotion and passion going on right now between collective bargaining. ... I am obviously disheartened."
