Its always amusing to see the same clowns who claim that everyone was checking for illmatic in the other thread also turn around and say no one was checking out for RD.
Fact is RD on an independent label sold a lot more than Illmatic on a major label. The only major acclaim that Illmatic got was from a magazine (1 journalist writes the fukking review) and fewer people were checking for it - numbers don't lie. People only gave a fukk about Nas on his second album thanks to the pop remake of Rule the world and Lauryn Hill on the hook.
The whole Mind Squad determined the ratings. One person would write the review, but the whole magazine determined the mics.

Two things are true:

1) It was slept-on nationally upon its release. It was not an "instant classic."
2) It is one of the best albums of all time, and has aged better than nearly everything else that came out in 96.

It wouldn't be the first slept-on album.

rd was getting recognition in the usual ny media sources like magazines, radio. but not one called it a classic. no one even mentioned the word classic with RD until Jay said it like 5 years later, which is why it never has been or will be a classic.

So, in your feeble mind, all Jay has to do is call something a classic and it becomes?

It wasn't that it wasn't poppin. It was just there was so much more popular in 96 at the time. Jay Z went "Gold" and had a "Gold" single on a independent label. Mobb Deep also went Gold that year too with "Hell on Earth". That's actually very good. But when you have competition like 2Pac, The Fugees and NaS selling multi-platinum, it outshinned Jay. But the album did do very well for a new emcee. It actually did better than "ILLmatic" commercially. But believe it or not, Lil Kim and Foxy Brown were both more popular than Jay in 96 and he was featured on both their Platinum Debut albums.

Illmatic debuted at number 12 while Reasonable Doubt debuted at 23. Both took two years to go Gold and 7 years to go Platinum so no, RD did not do "better" commercially than Illmatic

No. Reasonable Doubt came out in June and was certified gold in September of 1996. Secondly, RD came out in 1996 and went platinum in February 2002. Illmatic came out in 94 and went platinum in December 2001. RD was clearly more commercially successful by any metric.

Well I did. Anyone who heard Dead Presidents, Brooklyns Finest or the joint with Shai knew good and well there was a new big boy emerging. pause.

exactly.

I don't like how people tend to act like biggie was some untouchable figure. 2pac as well.

I think Jay-Z summed it up best on "Hard Knock Life":

"I gave you prophecy on my first joint, and you all lamed out
didn't really appreciate it till the second one came out"

When RD was released, it was viewed as an excellent album, but not necessarily an instant classic or hip-hop landmark.

But it got enough respect to put Jay-Z in the "best MC" conversation. XXL crowned Jay-Z the best MC alive in it's first issue (released in the summer of 1997, before Vol. 1 came out)

I think after Jay-Z blew up, people went back and gave it some more consideration, and it achieved the status it deserved all along.

well how many albums were actually considered instant classics in the 1st place?

people tossing the word classic around all willy-nilly is some new chit.

the fact that the album instantly put jay-z in the best mc conversation says it all. you couldn't be included in such a conversation in those days with just 1 joint under your belt if it aint a classic.

f*ck xxl tho.

this is false.

very false.

hip-hop heads are all that really matter.

nobody actually cares about the opinions of casual listeners.

But yet sales numbers always comes out of his fans lips when talking about his greatness. A large proportion of his clientele are "casual listeners".
