Somebody actually tried to say Jay was bigger than Busta in '96?:wtf:

Woo Hah was a MAJOR hit....shyt was everywhere.Bus had wayyyyy more originality back then.

These Jr nikkaz got Jay burnt into their retinas. They keep imprinting 2013 Jay onto '96 Jay.

Frankly, Jay wasn't shyt in '96.He was Foxxy Brown's sidekick.

Jay and his marketing schemes:banderas:.....He done pushed a whole matrix of propaganda into these nikkaz heads

We got dudes In Here that we're 11! Years old in 96 trying to tell people that were grown Or damn near grown how it was back then.

I swear Jay Stans are like Zombies.

jay was bigger than busta rhymes in '96 amongst legit rap heads and on the streets.

by far. its not even arguable.

Wrong, if you didn't know about Jay Z at that time, it is because he was a local new york guy who's music wasn't good enough at the time to reach the masses, it has nothing to do with not being a "real rap fan". fukk outta here with that bullshyt :camby:

And that is why Reasonable Doubt is not a classic...because...who outside of New York was listening to it? Man I remember when illmatic dropped... that shyt was everywhere...when my friends from the east coast came down south...we talked about it and listened to it and everyone felt it was a classic...and when my friends from the west coast came down we talked about it and played it and everyone knew it was a classic...and when my canadian friends came down...same thing...

Not even my east coast friends were listening to Reasonable Doubt like that...outside of that single with Foxy no one was even checking for it like that...

Just own up to the fact that Jay told you something was a classic and you said to yourself " yeah jay is right this is a classic"...

Music labels were pushing to me at the time? Huh...what? We didn't even listen to the radio...we used to hit up the sam goody in the next town over and listen to at least 1 / 3 of an album in the back before we would buy it...fukk outta here with that bullshyt :camby:

how the hell was jay-z not reaching the masses when he was getting daytime spins on mtv?

this whole idea of jay being a nobody is whats really revisionist if you want to be really-real.

and how did you know about nas in '94 but not jay in '96? nas aint even have no hits.

this is wild contradictory.

Wasn't poppin in 96? I keep seein nikkas sayin that no one was checkin for Hov and nikkas thought it was trash until Jay himself started sayin that it was classic later on. I was born in 95 so it doesn't sound right to me that the GOAT was considered wack :yeshrug:

So is that true or is the booth just bullshyttin?

the only truth to what you said is sales wise, no one was looking for jay...his debut didn't do numbers...skills wise - no one thought he was wack....after dead presidents dropped, people paid attention...after the album dropped, people really starting paying attention to jay......the cat showed he could spit his ass off, and had potential to become one of the greats...which he eventually became..

Only people who cared about Jay-Z where people from New York, outside of that no one cared.

If and when they began to became curious was when 2Pac said his name on wax during his Makaveli era.

not true...i'm not from ny and I started listening for jay before the pac mention...started after hearing dead presidents...same goes for a lot of the cats I knew...it was different then though, we only cared about the music...

reading the thread, most of the people saying that jay was a nobody are people that weren't all that into hip-hop at the time.

meanwhile, most of the people that actually were into hip-hop like that are telling them differently and basically being ignored as the people that weren't up on game continue to use faulty logic and repeat the same chit.

that's the coli for ya.

Only read first page but as a 27 year old I remember seein Jay for the first time on BET in Foxy's "I'll Be Good" video.

At the time I didnt know why he was able to get a guest verse on her album so I thought Jay was just a nerdy dude with glasses who was smashin her. Basically the same thing as Nicki's SB.

I didnt know he had solo shyt til I saw the Sunshine video in 97 (I was 11). Didnt know shyt about Reasonable Doubt til years later. Didnt really check for him til "Money Aint A Thang" then "Can I Get A" came and showed he wasnt leavin. It was a wrap after "Hard Knock Life" and I been a fan ever since. Not sure why some are actin like you aint a Jay fan if you aint rockin w/ him since RD :childplease:

Anyone who cant respect that is extra :flabbynsick:
