the only truth to what you said is sales wise, no one was looking for jay...his debut didn't do numbers...skills wise - no one thought he was wack....after dead presidents dropped, people paid attention...after the album dropped, people really starting paying attention to jay......the cat showed he could spit his ass off, and had potential to become one of the greats...which he eventually became..

not true...i'm not from ny and I started listening for jay before the pac mention...started after hearing dead presidents...same goes for a lot of the cats I knew...it was different then though, we only cared about the music...

reading the thread, most of the people saying that jay was a nobody are people that weren't all that into hip-hop at the time.
meanwhile, most of the people that actually were into hip-hop like that are telling them differently and basically being ignored as the people that weren't up on game continue to use faulty logic and repeat the same chit.

At the time I didnt know why he was able to get a guest verse on her album so I thought Jay was just a nerdy dude with glasses who was smashin her. Basically the same thing as Nicki's SB.
I didnt know he had solo shyt til I saw the Sunshine video in 97 (I was 11). Didnt know shyt about Reasonable Doubt til years later. Didnt really check for him til "Money Aint A Thang" then "Can I Get A" came and showed he wasnt leavin. It was a wrap after "Hard Knock Life" and I been a fan ever since. Not sure why some are actin like you aint a Jay fan if you aint rockin w/ him since RD

i was 6 in 96 and from new orleans in 96(bumpin all cashmoney shyt, all day), so i wont speak on the reception it got but what i can do is sit back wit a clear view wit no emotions or hype attached and listen to the top albums in the 96, and as i did i think rd is the best of that year, and one of the best in music hstory, i think iww is second
