Please stop referring to the album as an "independent" album.I don't know why people are shocked that an independent introspective cocaine dealing debut album wasn't the biggest album of the year
Often you needed some time or commercial momentum, just look at Kind Of Blue, that's the best example of one of the best albums of all time.
Lol @ people not fukking with it go back and listen to all the interviews of people calling it a dope album, only getting dope reviews. The difference is back in 96 your shyt wasn't classified as a classic just like that, often the classic stamp took a while if you were not moving units like Pac and Big. The jews over at The Source had some power but let's be honest they were all backpackers. Their negative views of RD was that it was too violent and too misogynistic. Compare the albums that got 5 mic directly and the ones that got 4, 4.5 and were changed to 5 later on, imo the latter is better.
The Source wasn't all backpackers. In fact, "backpack" albums were frequently shytted on. I made a thread about this.
You're probably right about the list of albums bumped up to 5 being better than those that initially got 5, but only because from some point in 91 to 97, other than Illmatic, no album got 5. Also, deciding whether an album is classic before it's even released, is sort of silly in the first place.
That shyt wasn't popping only cities beside Brooklyn rocking with the bul was Philly.

RD was hot cause he had MTV singles with one of the hottest female emcees and one of the hottest R&B singers + the hottest rapper on the street single and Flex was playing that shyt like crazy. Word is that he got brown paper bags as well. Cause there was Roc-a-fella benzes, trucks and on riding around in NY, cause they were in the clubs with Big and Puff and blowing mad money and on.
