I can see why people would put him in their top 10.

This is one of those situations where you really had to be there.

Pun's pen and song making ability was something else. He was toe to toe with every other lyrical heavyweight in the game at the time.

Joe's beet album(Don Cartegena) has Pun's DNA all over it and that album is great for a Fat Joe album.

Don't Believe the Hype
Yeah, problem is most folks first heard Pun on Beatnuts' "Off the Books" as a feature - which dropped in September '97. He passed in February of 2000, so that's 29 months.

In that time he dropped a classic album, helped with Fat Joe's and Terror Squad project, and barely finished his second record.

For the record, he's one of my favorites. Just what he did on "John Blaze". Having to follow Nas and then outshining him and everyone else on that record, was incredible.

Great run. Any time you drop an amazing/classic album and outshine prime Nas on a track you're gonna be the man. But like most people said it didn't last long enough to truly be considered top ten for most people. He clearly mastered the Ready To Die/Life After Death blueprint when it comes to a proper mix of street tracks and dope ladies tracks though. I would have loved to see how that would evolve if he had lived longer.

Nas rewrote his verse. There’s another version of the song with a different beat and a different verse from Nas.

Pun was dope at the time. Lost some steam with his 2nd album and then he died. Or maybe he died before that .. I think the stuff with his wife and beef with Joe and linx have put a black cloud over his legacy

That second album was a letdown no matter who you asked.

Before that though he was in supernova mode. He was everywhere. He had white people yelling “boricua! Morena!” He had guys on sportscenter saying “I’m not a player I just crush a lot” when a guy hit a home run. He had commercial appeal and support from “real” rap fans.

I can’t really call it a “run” but he had a moment as big as almost anyone’s.

Pun was the fukking man in real time don't listen to these fools you can't be out in people top 10 if you wasn't nice death or not. At the time the top 10 list wasn't as congested as it is now so it's not a stretch.

Nobody got KRS on tracks back then and he absolutely smoked him dude was on another planet
