Volume 2 was certified 3X plat by December of 98 despite coming out in September. DMX debut didn’t get to that till the next year and it came out in May Hard knock life didn’t drop as a single till 3 weeks after V2 came out, the album was already a smash

No. Pun went platinum his first album.
Pun was a faaaaar bigger deal than Big L.
Big L had a strong underground buzz when he signed to Columbia, but then got outshined with the whole Nas hysteria, and kinda got shelved and didn't drop his debut until 1995, where a lot of the songs sounded dated and sold poorly.
Big Punisher came out with a couple of hit singles out the gate. He dropped in April and was platinum by July of the same year

The overall impact DMX had hat year was bigger that Jay. He was the biggest rap phenomenon that year.
