Nobody ever said Outkast was as hardcore as Mobb Deep. My whole point is that one isn't more Hip Hop than the other in response to the post below:

^^^ It is a diss. Both are Hip Hop because Hip Hop covers a varying range of styles and sounds. Just because Mobb Deep has a more grimier sound doesn't make them more Hip Hop because Hip Hop wasn't always grimey from a sonic perspective. To imply one is more Hip Hop than the other is straight up ignorant.

^^^ Huge songs from '92-'94 with a heavy R&B influence and there's a lot of them that I could've posted. But Kast was the only artists that had an R&B influence in their sound.

How were they marketed as a rap group with R&B influence?

I don't think anyone is arguing they were as hardcore as Mobb Deep in the mid 90s. At this point the argument is were they viewed as a regular hip hop group? Or hip hop smoothed out on the R&B tip with a pop feel appeal to it

I'm talking about the version on the album.
The version they did a video for.
There are lots of rap songs that chart on the rnb charts. I read the reason for it at some point, but I dont' remember now. Billboard putting a song on a chart doesn't make it r&B though.

I never heard of the LaFace Christmas album until years later. Same thing with the TLC remix. My first introduction to Kast was that video. That video is not how you introduce or market an R&B/hip hop song. At all.

People were all over that song and Kast immediately after that out here in CA.

this is where you keep getting tripped up. you keep thinking from strictly a rap fan's perspective.
I think the only person arguing against this, that actually follows r&b is @JustCKing, but hes special.

you may not have been aware of those compilations & guest features, but a lot of r&b fans were - which is basically the gist of this whole argument. the fact that they went after the r&b crowd first & foremost is telling.

players ball video was my introduction to outkast as well, but me being into r&b, I knew what it was as soon as I saw laface at the bottom of the credit. they wanted that arrested development money.
shoot, iirc, first time I saw that video, I might've thought it was arrested development when I first turned it on.
