No one can say anything about Nas' pen game or songwriting, so they have to resort to things like him not having hits (even though his prime years were full of memorable songs) and his production being bad (which is something that gets repeated by people who don't even listen to his music past 2002).

There was a time where I might have thought that his discography fell off at some point, but it didn't. That period of his career (Street's Disciple to Untitled) that gets written off for some reason had some of his best work, but it will never get the respect it deserves because it wasn't full of chart-topping hits. What should matter is if he can still make music at a high level. Is he aging well as an artist? King's Disease is proof that he is.

The anti-Nas points being brought up in here are f'n awful, like yall sound like you're not even really trying. "He don't be chartin like that. He don't sell platinum like that". How don't you see how weak this shyt looks? Lol.

I'm a stan and I could argue why he isn't a G.O.A.T. better than yall, lol...I aint delusional tho, or a hater.

don’t you have to make music that reaches pass your stanbase?

every artist most hardcore fans ( thecoli for Nas) thinks their guy is the goat.

fact is Nas music has only moved and meant something to Nas Stans for 2 decades basically what @Piff Perkins said.

SD sales didn’t count twice. A double album has to clock in at least 100 minutes to be counted twice. SD clocks in at just under 88 minutes. So SD was a “pure” platinum selling album.
Ok so since 2004 he’s been a Gold artist

Mind you in that era a lot of ppl went Plat it wasn’t even a top 10 first week that year for SD

But there's approximately half a million of them so his releases still work. lol

I've never heard someone credible NOT have Nas in their top 5. Even those who don't fukk with his music respect Nas as a legendary god tier MC.

That was Nas 13 years into his career and 10 years removed from his debut. Name someone besides Outkast and Snoop (1993) who was still going platinum in that era that dropped their debut album in 1994.

For me to buy that argument, Nas can't be the only GOAT level rapper with great rapping ability who gets dismissed like that. If people were downplaying Jay similarly I'd say ok you have a point, but that doesn't happen. For some reason Nas gets dismissed and criticized in ways few others do. And I think it's because he hasn't had a hit in decades. Because of that, a lot (not most) people view him closer to Big/Pac in the GOAT discussion in terms of being "the past," ie stagnant. Verses more active GOAT candidates who have hit songs and albums over the last few years like Jay or Wayne.

I'm in my early 30s. The "Mount Rushmore" of rap for me, and many Coli people, is Nas/Pac/Jay/Biggie. But the Mount Rushmore of rap for the generation after us differs drastically. Wayne is there for sure. Jay is there for sure. Kanye is probably there. And then it kinda depends on what you like or where you're from. Gucci, Drake, Kendrick, Cole, Future, etc. Basically we're watching Biggie and Pac move into the past - not forgotten, but no longer prioritized. It's a conversation/situation LL Cool J/Rakim/BDK/KRS fans went through in the mid 90s, when they saw the new generation completely move on from their heroes. Unfortunately I think a lot of people view Nas in that "past" category, and it's why some people don't even count him. They don't wanna hear it.

All of this is true

But going back to the 99-02 when I was in HS and entering College I remember having heated debates with dudes saying Nas is wack.

The masses is always going to prefer that simple catchy verse with a couple of punchlines compared to an introspective verse which is what Nas does.

That why Nas probably has the most loyal Stan base because we know the way he raps everybody not going to get and we feel privileged that we get it.

SD debuted at number 5 selling 232K what you talking about breh? Where are you getting your facts:gucci:

The point of the matter is that Nas wouldn’t have gotten $10 Million dollars from Def Jam if he wasn’t a proven commodity in the sales department. As soon as he went to Def Jam his first three solo albums all debuted at number 1. And they went Gold.

Can you name another rapper not named Jay-Z who EIGHTEEN YEARS after they debuted was still debuting within at least the top 5 on billboard and selling Gold? Those names don’t EXIST breh. I’m not trying to say that Nas was this super Diamond selling artist but to ignore his commercial and mainstream success and continued relevance (Nas with King’s Disease now sets the record for longest span of Rap Album Grammy noms at 22 years since I am was nominated in 99) is just faulty logic

“12 years later, I thank Mr. Duncan for allowing us to memorize the lyrics to Nas’ song because it has instigated my growth as a person, sister, daughter, friend, and child of God”. [5] She explains how the African historical narrative, fulfilled an educational element many rap artists neglect to incorporate, yet would make their work more meaningful. By incorporating education, the audience has an opportunity to learn from the song, creating long-term impact. Carson identifies, “Read more, learn more, change the globe”, as one her favorite lyrics from the song because it “exemplifies how and why we strive to make our mark in this world”

A lot of it has to do with Nas music and content not really being as easily digestible, or "cool" as some of his peers as well...even to me, a super duper fan, musically I wish he'd make more shyt for the 85'ers, lol...just cause I want my guy to shine. That's why I love KD, its quality but also easily digestible.

But he is right, all the unbelievable ones get kinda slighted or completely ignored, for the most part
His music super easy to digest when you grow mentally.
