His catalogue too small. I cant give dudes who run was so short GOAT status. I just cant. I dont care what their rhyming level was. Its not fair to the guys who really had to navigate through different era's and maintain.
His run was way longer than Big or Pac but people don't hesitate to put them at the top either

It wasn't just Rakim who had a more complex style but he was innovative, he's a choice that's a good 1 too, not mad at anyone picking Rakim.

Californ-i-a by way of BK
Compare South Bronx to My Melody in 86 though.
The rappers I always hear the "first bred" of lyrical rappers references as their influences are The Treacherous Three and MC Silver Fox (Specifically Queens rappers like LL and G Rap for the latter)

In an interview with KRS, Rakim his influence was John Coltrane and he'd just try to rhyme to the rhythm of jazz.

put it this way...you obviously don't have a problem with HOV, Common or Ghost being in my top 5 considering they are in yours.

do you have a problem with Reggie being in the top 5? Or Cube? If not, what's the issue?

Didn't this idiot just say Kendrick was the goat rapper now he saying no one is on rakim's level.

Came here to say this.

Sidebar some professional looking Indian lady was on a CNN clip show and was proclaiming how he's the best rapper ever. This told me all I needed to know. :hubie:

I've always said the 'mandatory' top 3 rappers of all time are Nas, Jay-Z and Rakim. Nas and Jay-Z for their incredible discogs (no one has better discogs than either of these two), and Rakim for his incredible innovation.

Everyone else is a contender but can be replaced.

I wouldn't put Rakim as the greatest rapper ever for the obvious reason that pioneers aren't often the best/most lucrative practitioners of any artform/product. That's why being a pioneer is hard. You take the lumps building shyt. And when the rules are established and shyt's safer, then others swoop in and profit more (some for good, others for vulture). Nas is pound for pound a better rapper than Rakim with a way superior discog. But Nas isn't a pioneer.

Didn't this idiot just say Kendrick was the goat rapper now he saying no one is on rakim's level.

he's a fraud pandering for attention

Why was this topic made? Hip hop is black culture. Hip hop is our thing. Why do we value the opinion of an outsider? We don't do enough to protect our shyt that's how nonblacks can just come in and take over easily. Like when white bloggers gave Drake a pass for using ghost writers.

it's a never-ending problem, breh. This board is a perfect example. It's overrun by cacs who troll all day and think they can talk down on verified Black posters.

Pac has an extensive catalogue. A catalogue with better replay value.

I love Ra. I just don't think he was even the beginning for MC'ing like people say. LL was to me. LL run was better.

LL elements from what he did is rampant today.
