Posters are saying today is way better than the 90s. Is that true?

people are really underestimating using search engines.
people are underestimating entertainment options like streaming. Having to physically leave the house to go look for a movie at blockbuster vs sitting on your couch and using a remote.
You see 4k video, then going back to tube tvs. :francis:
Gaming.
Yo car breakdown somewhere, and you gotta find a phone somewhere, hopefully, you remember phone numbers and hopefully the people you call are sitting next to the phone vs calling for help directly in their pocket.
and a host of other things.

again, people are definitely glamourizing "being disconnected".

edit: and i see alot of people are speaking about this like when they were kids, so they remember the good nostalgia. i guess i'm mainly speaking like if i was an adult in both eras.
95-05 search engines were fine, plus people still knew how to use the library, encyclopedias, etc

not every hated leaving their house for a video, streaming is also lightweight wack when you spend 30 mins scrolling just to exit the app or watch a show you've seen several times like Fresh Prince or Friends. there's also tons of studies about how bad binge-watching is for health, streaming is incredibly flawed

you can improve tv resolution without all this other tech, and HD came out in 1998, HD was enough

not a gamer so don't care

we had cell phones in 95-05, you could call for help.

there's nothing to glamorize about being disconnected, it was actually better, 95-05 was the perfect balance of balanced connection...you used it as a tool, it wasn't your life. i'm :flabbynsick: per coli standards and think it's disgusting that people my age will meet up and just scroll thru a phone the whole time, wtf. that's not a better life than when we were 17/18/20 and used the phone to see if the other person was there and then the rest of the time was talking to one another. i'm watching people almost get hit by cars/cause accidents because they cant stay actively engaged in the real world and have to be looking at a screen, shyt's :trash:

Y’all may not like what’s goin on today but it could always be worse
But what exactly was going on in the 90s to say it’s better than today

There's no way I'm going back to carrying a phone + CD player + and mid size laptop around around

Better life my ass

Crazy shyt about libraries my teacher friend was telling me for her district that in like the next 5 to 10, years, librarians gonna have to get teaching credentials and become teaching librarians since libraries are becoming less used in the grand scope of schooling

Why complain about technology and media. I know it's 2023 but newsflash: you can actually talk to the people on their phone

Most of them are either shy or doing it out of boredom

alot of this is glamourizing being disconnected. LOL

knowing what we have now, nobody is going to willingly go back WITHOUT technology. it'll be cute using a payphone and yellowpages a couple times, then NOT being able to reach in your pocket and google everything would have people hittin that :beli:.

knowing what we have now...it'll be fun to go to Sam Goody and Blockbuster once or twice to get music and movies, but then you'll start missing having this stuff in your pocket.

And on the search engine thing, yes we had search engines in the early 2000s but that was still on a whole PC. And even having the internet everywhere was later in the the 2000s.

i'm sure there are whole bunch of other things we use technology for that i can't even think of right now. but people are definitely over doing the nostalgia for that era.

Advancements in technology and lower crime rates are better today like another breh said.

Everything else though 90s >>>

That late 80s era though the 90s until about 2002 era was were some good times for me.

Social media, the internet becoming mainstream, and advent of smartphones made everything more convenient but a lot other younger generations lost the swagger and social skills people of the older generations had.

Unless you are talking about tech, which to the common person is a phone, laptop and tv. Theres nothing "peak" about the times right now or in the past 15yrs. I think the late 90s early 2000s is the best mix of everything. Even the medical advances now would have the edge if not for the fact that its so much more unaffordable now.

bro, not everyone needs the level of connectivity we have. i remember life vividly from 95-05 - no one needed a yellowpages or payphone past 02 :heh:

it's amazing how seamlessly we functioned without being able to google everything at any second, you needed to know where a coffee shop was? stop and ask someone...gas station? it aint hard to find, hit a main road, you'll come across several.

yes, you'd have problems taking all this away now, but if we never evolved past where teach was in 05-06, we'd be perfectly fine.

and for the thread, assessing life being better in the 90's goes way beyond tech. politics, the economy, society, etc are at play in that question and we were in a better place across all those categories + had enough tech advancement to not be living life like the 1950's
