nope as demographics change so will that
The leafs have more older generations in their fanbase than the raps. Their fanbase is more wider and older than the raptors fanbase. The Silent generation, Boomers and Generation X demographics seem to be much more Leafs leaning.
Normal because The maple leafs were created and founded in 1917, they are old as the NHL itself. Meanwhile the raptors only came to Toronto in 1995, so 78 years later than the leafs.
They had a nearly 80 years head start on the raptors. And they also had a 60-year head start on the blue jays, who played their first ever season in Toronto during the 1977 season. That’s why the leafs still remain the most important team in the Toronto market as of now.
The younger folks: Millenials, Generation Z, and generation alpha- seem to be raptors leaning.
There is a rural/urban divide as well.
Leafs fanbase is huge and dispersed in the rest of Ontario while raptors fanbase is much more concentrated in the GTA( greater Toronto area) the further you get away from Toronto/416/905, the more you feel the presence of hockey.
Compare
the areas like Parry Sound/London/Bowmanville/Guelph/Brantford/Burlington/Peterborough vs the areas like downtown Toronto, the entire 416 area code, East York, Mississauga, Brampton,Markham, Regent Park, Rexdale, Regent Park, Flemingdon Park, Scarborough etc
Racial/ethnic divide too, the raps fanbase seems to be more younger, multicultural and
reaches every demographic while the leafs fanbase skews more older and whiter.
You have to take into account that white folks/multi-generational Canadians are still the majority in the province and half of the GTA population. Visible minorities/immigrants are a dominant demographic group inside the GTA but outside of the GTA it’s 90% multigenerational Canadian white folks. Also boomers and generation X combined are a still a huge part of Ontario population.
People who are Leafs fans first will still follow the raps casually, while people who are Raptors fans first don’t care about the leafs or hockey. It seems there are More raptors only fans than leafs only fans under the age of 35.
I don’t care about nationwide (rest of Canada) only local and regional fan demographics (GTA and southern Ontario)
But overall, deep down the GTA/Ontario is still a hockey mad area even with the popularity of basketball. If the Leafs had the same kind of success the Raps have had in the last decade(two conference finals,
and one final appearance that led to a championship ) mfs all across Ontario would have immediately raised and built statues for every member of the Maple Leafs roster everywhere in this province. Even every member of the coaching staff and management would have their own statues. Literally a generation of kids would be named after Leafs heroes. People went crazy and wild for Kawhi Leonard because of his heroics, imagine how wilder and crazier they would go for Austin Matthews, if he ever got his shyt together. Masai Ujiri was a god in this city/province after the 2019 chip, imagine what kind of treatment Brendan Shanahan and Brad Treliving, respectively the current president and the current general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, would receive in this town.
St. Louis Cardinals are the epitome of this; Its them first and ppl's interest in everything else is fickle at best
St. Louis threw their NFL/NBA teams to the bushes
and preferred to keep the whitest sports around
It’s arguably the only city in America where people truly live and die by baseball. Other sports just don’t matter to them, they passively ignore them. The cards are the most successful franchise of the National League (MLB) with a rich history and winning tradition going back to the late 19th century/early 20th century. This team has deep roots in the lives, memories, hearts and minds of the people of STL.
Also there’s no professional sports competition aside from the Blues (NHL) and baseball and hockey seasons never overlap anyway. Baseball ends when hockey begins and hockey season ends just as baseball season begins. These two sports only overlap in spring when both the nhl playoffs and early baseball season briefly run at the same time.
Also, so-called baseball first cities like NY, LA, Boston, and Chicago all have professional sports in the other major leagues and as cities are all inherently much more bigger and more much fun than STL. They are all world class cities with plenty of entertainment and fine dining options. STL is a boring racist dump compared to these cities.
Watching their beloved cards at Busch stadium is one of the few fun things they can do.
