Lol. Kendrick is my second or third favorite rapper ever, but he can't do anything with Lupe, nothing to see here.
Lupe is in a tier
entirely by himself when it comes to
actual rapping. He's the Michael Jordan of putting words together with KD height, Lebron athleticism and a Curry jump shot. There is a sizeable gap between him and his contemporaries - even the ones ya'll consider GOATs. I see a lot of ya'll tryna dumb him down (pun intended) by just giving him props as a lyricist or saying "well, lyrically he's up there", but no lol. Concepts, lyricism, flow, rhyme schemes, versatility. Ain't shyt this man can't do at an extremely high level. Lupe only has two weaknesses. One, he doesn't have the strongest voice. Two, he's mostly been unwilling to conform to industry standards both in terms of music politics and song crafting. The one time he tried, Lasers, was an epic fail. Other than that, he is a flawless emcee.
To anyone who actually appreciates the art of rapping and knows the man's catalog is aware that, in truth, it's been about who the second best rapper is for a long time now. The first has BEEN obvious. To be frank, a lot of ya'll also aren't well-versed enough nor have the intellectual capacity to even peep what dude is doing with his words, so that also plays a big factor. Comprehension skills be lacking and shyt be flying over ya'll heads, even his less abstract, easier to digest shyt. It's the only way nikkas can put Kendrick in Lupe's stratosphere with a straight face
Don't care about sales, grammys, radio play, or who the machine is behind. I also think Lupe is being meek/humble with the "better artist" talk too. Artistry is subjective. I value the art of elite rapping over anything else. To me, what Lupe did on Mural is far more artistically impressive than Kendrick making funny voices , having skits, and being backed by the industry's very best musicians and producers. Maybe THEY collectively are a more impressive group artistically than Lupe and his team, but in terms of man to man, 1 on 1 at the rucker? Ehhhh....lemme know when Kendrick does a song about two dead children resurrected in an alternate timeline to live meaningful lives, a zombie hustler's rise and fall from grace, Dinosaurs, or uses the flow of 5 different iconic rappers in one song.
Nas, Jay, Andre 3000 and a very few others are the only ones I'll entertain a conversation about being on his level. Kendrick is great, but he is not one of these people. Kendrick isn't even the best rapper in his own camp. That'd be a sober Ab-Soul quiet handedly.
