The hook is "Started from the BOTTOM now we HERE"

mannn this is crazy

Nothing in that record comes across as pretentious

@ExodusNirvana

seriously, look at the video and listen to his lyrics lol...

It's clearly subjective and refereeing to "his bottom"

these guys are suffering from GENERATIONAL LAPSES...

but I can share the TRUTH cause that was MY ERA....

PUBLIC ENEMY never got played on black radio unless it was the late hours of the evening mixmaster radio shows with cats like Chuck Chillout on KISS FM who was the first to break tracks from the IT TAKES A NATION album...back in the 80's

CHUCK talked about it all the time.."RADIO STATIONS I QUESTION YOUR BLACKNESS ..YOU CALL YOURSELF BLACK BUT WE WILL SEE IF YOU PLAY THIS!!!" (bring the noise) PE

Same with RUN DMC...bso called black radio thought they were TOO HARD AND ROCK SOUNDING they didn't know how to put it in their urban formats

in fact RUN DMC first got seen via their video "ROCK BOX" on Night Flight a late night music video show that featured underground cutting edge genre acts...

IN FACT MTV took a liking to them easier than any r&b or black pop act..they had an easier time getting on MTV than Michael Jackson

And this WAS LONG BEFORE their CROSSOVER HIT "WALK THIS WAY" with AEROSMITH...

MTV use to film late night concerts and one of them featured RUN DMC with a young LL COOL J that clip is on YOUTUBE

you have to keep in mind hip hop at this time was seen as COUNTER CULTURE so the suburban whites who hated POP MUSIC and CORPORATE HAIR METAL BANDS were drawn to guys like RUN DMC which paved the way for BEASTIE BOYS....

Same with NWA....NO BLACK PROMOTER not even my beloved AL HAYMON (LMAO) WOULD BOOK THEM FOR TOURS...

It was GUNS N ROSES with "racist" azz AXL ROSE who had them open for him cause he loved the "controversy"...

:wow:

That inconvenient truth @DMGAINGREEN

I need all these young brehs with this pseudo revisionist outlook on how hip hop used to be to READ AND Re-READ THIS POST

Dog if Drake was'nt a famous dude right? And you just met him at a party or some shyt....but you had heard of him through other friends who were close to him and could accurately speak on his life...and ya'll all standing around talking shooting the shyt, people talking about their upbringing and where they from...

You would'nt raise an eyebrow at a nikka saying one thing that sounds all well and good but is completely devoid of the ACTUAL truth and reality of his background?

You would'nt say "Damn that nikka fronting..." or some manner of :francis::rudy:

Or would you say "Yeah that nikka bullshytting but the way he said the bullshyt...you know what...I'ma let him slide and not call him out :ehh:"

[Verse 1:]
I done kept it real from the jump
Living at my mama's house we'd argue every mornin'
I was trying to get it on my own
Working all night, traffic on the way home
And my uncle calling me like "Where ya at?
I gave you the keys told ya bring it right back" (
:mjlol: )
I just think it's funny how it goes
Now I'm on the road, half a million for a show
And we...

[Verse 2:]
Boys tell stories about the man
Say I never struggled, wasn't hungry, yeah, I doubt it,
I could turn your boy into the man
There ain't really much I hear that's poppin' off without us,
We just want the credit where it's due
I'mma worry about me, give a f_ about you
just as a reminder to myself
I wear every single chain, even when I'm in the house
Cause we...

:comeon: what about these buttery/cheesy lyrics implies or misrepresents his struggle? What about it is pretentious?

Are you trolling?

The words he's spitting allude to him being just like you and me, a person who has perhaps struggled to get to where he wanted to get to within his profession or career or life but we all know the reality is that he was a child TV star with inroads to the entertainment industry so to imply that his journey is similar to his peers or even the average fan is facetious

I'm not trolling

I'm saying that nothing in his Started form the bottom story is pretentious. The video is goofy, the lyrics are laughable but that was his struggle. Borrowing his Uncles Car to make it to and from his job

arguing with his mother

Drake never claimed to be moving birds across state lines

I remember my dad saying hip-hop was just noise. He didn't even respect it until Native Tongues came around.

@DMGAINGREEN come in here breh

It's sad that a lot of the younger fans want to project this pro black fubu esq mantra on hip hop's roots but the reality is a little more disheartening. Hip Hop's inception wasn't the civil rights movement lol

Europeans have played a critical role (fans, vultures, critics, end users, and owners) in this genre since day 1.. I've noticed post Mike Brown it's been cool to act like this wasn't/isn't true but hey :manny:
