I'd imagine there's a lot of sociopaths in the clerical class because they know they can a) trick these gullible people into believing and doing whatever they want b) if they ever get caught doing fukked up shyt, forgiveness is inherently built into the system so they can avoid any repercussions or consequences while on earth, delaying any punishment to some supposed eternal judge.
I mean, ironically, the only real reason I've ever had to potentially believe in any supernatural entity, is because a lot of Christianity throughout time looks suspiciously demonic

, burning people alive, rampant pedophile rings, death cults etc. and part of me thinks the only way all that shyt could've gone down is if some sort of devil was involved.
But that's essentially just the gnostic position, that the earth was created by an imperfect 'demiurge' who basically fukked up when creating earth, which is why there's so much suffering. The only religious position whose tenants I've read and gone
