It purposefully got dumbed down because more artists wised up to contract/publishing games, and won't be signed to rubbish deals anymore. The talentless will sign anything just to get a hint of attention and pseudo-stardom...and they're not reading the fine print.

There's always going to be good music. We just have to wean ourselves off the idea of only getting to it through certain "approved" channels, and most especially learn how to ignore the middlemen.
