It's crazy how Brook Lopez turned himself into the beau idéal modern-day 5: shooting 3s and defending the paint at a high level.

Looking back Atkinson might have saved his career by having him develop that three ball and taking him out of the paint

What's crazy about a player working hard on their craft

I'm just simply saying that Brook Lopez - a player who once upon a time primarily played with his back to the basket and wasn't a notable rim/paint protector, eventually became one of the best 3-pt shooting big men and a legitimate defensive presence in the paint. Nobody would've thought that was even possible over the first half of his career.

That's what's crazy about it, as very few players change their identity/player makeup to that degree.

Presti would have signed him, Presti loved him & wanted him during the Reggie Jackson trade but Brook was a FA at the end of that season I believe & they weren't sure if he would want to be in OKC/they would be able to keep him.

Traded for Kanter because he would be a RFA instead so they could at least have some control.
