Did any of those other Bleek joints leak at all?
:mjcry: Negative.

I don't know why. I think if 9th had been up there it would've been different maybe? 9th was in the room with Jay when they did Threat. With Bleek it was mostly Young Guru (one of 9th's best friends) trying to sell Bleek on the idea of having 9th do the whole album. I wanna say there may have even made a comment like "this could be like how Premier produced all of Group Home's first album" which Bleek may not have liked. :heh:

But I still really like Smoke the Pain Away and Alright. Someone else rapped over Smoke the Pain Away too. I'll find it somewhere for you. I wanna say it was Joe Scudda, and when Bleek wanted it, 9th asked if it was cool for Bleek to use it and they obviously said yes.

Gave this a spin this morning. It's alright.

But fact is 9th Wonder has dedicated the past 9 years of his career to getting this girl recognized as a major player in hip hop, and it's never going to work. Gza and Latifah have the best verses on this album. Their mic presence and skills come from them being selected and promoted due to their talent. Rapsody has some talent, but as a solo artist it's never going to happen. She should be in a group with more charismatic rappers.

I thought she was dope in Kooley High and worked well in a group dynamic as well.

I'm impressed with the amount of work she's done. I think a collab project with her and Eric G would be really dope. I also think as weird as this sounds, that a collab project with her and Alchemist could be interesting, just because he's worked with almost no female emcees, and she sounded good on the one track they've done together

I know 9th wants Rapsody to be bigger, but I'd really like to hear her almost on some Jean Grae shyt in terms of doing interesting indie projects. I don't think that's what her team wants for her though. As long as there's some gas in the tank on her lane being the torch bearer for black women in the game, then I think that's the road they'll be traveling. Not mad it it though.

I think it's interesting that this board seemed to really be behind her before the Grammy situation, and then it kind of switched.

I'm going off memory here, but I don't ever recall the board being big fans of her, even before the Grammy nom. I recall, here and offline ppl moaning about all the features she was getting on every compilation.

It goes back to talent and mic presence. IMO Jean Grae is light years ahead of Rapsody, and none of the albums Rap has made are as good as Jeanius.

Agreed.

She's definitely talented, but still not a top tier lyricist. 9th has done a lot of work in calling in favors to get her more visibility over the past few years. And you have to respect how hard he's working on getting her out there, but at a certain point, the music has to resonate with the people. The Roc Nation situation is going to get her all the promo and co-signs, but her music comes and goes. No one can front on her talent, but she's a limited artist who gets decent hype from her peers, but it never really moves the goalposts.

No doubt. I may be remembering wrong. I just seem to remember Crown and Beauty and the Beast being somewhat well received here. I may be wrong for sure./

Jeanius was fire. I wish Jean and 9th had finished the sequel, Phoennix. Jeanius might be my favorite album from a female emcee.

BTW I'm pretty sure most producers think sampling Phil Collins is played out, but It's be curious to know some takes on it? @SoulController @TEKBEATZ @head shots101 @darealvelle @Youseenmywork @Urbanmiracle @amillerjr @pawdalaw @MurderToCassette @Double Burger With Cheese @Ace of the Metropolitan I wanna say I've never heard that specific part of the song chopped up before. Are my ears basic for thinking this flip is pretty fresh? I wanna say I don't even hear many vocal samples from this, and mostly just the melody being sampled. :jbhmm:

9th is just extremely dope at chopping and arranging samples and patterns off them. No matter what the song is known or unknown. And he formulates his ideas so quick. I probably watch his rhythm roulette at least a few times a month. That's just such a dope look into his process. And that other joint where he was in the studio chopping one on his laptop. Big fan of him minus his come on Nas gimmick lol

Hopefully they shoot a video for the joint with Latifah, that verse was crazy.

It's a good look for Rap when all of her features come through and body their parts, shows some mutual respect.

All I'm listening to at the moment is this and Little Brother, good music for the soul.
