Yo....LMAO at Soul On Ice. Talk about revisionist history....at least people liked Reasonable Doubt in '96....Soul on Ice was considered a 3 mic album at best. And personally that might even be too generous
To respond to this thread, I first need to point out to people that just because Reasonable Doubt wasn't called a classic in 96 doesn't mean it isn't a classic. Time is the true test of all albums, the ones that get better are classics and the ones that get worse are hot garbage. There are a ton of albums from the 60's and 70's looked at as some of the greatest of all time that were thought to be terrible when they were released.
I think Reasonable Doubt has shown its greatness over the years. It was underrated upon release because it was the tail end of Hip Hop's true golden era, 1988-1996. There were lots of classics that year and it got lost in the bunch. Being as Hip Hop in truly artful, album format is about 30 years old you would have to say that anything that is top 50 of all time is a classic, and RD is most definitely top 50. I would put it top 30.
All that being said, it is not the best album of all time and not in the discussion. That is pure brainwashing. There are very few contenders for GOAT album, and it takes more than 1 persons opinion to crown it. A consensus among knowledgeable, influential, intelligent critics/people would probably put these albums in contention:
Paid In Full
Straight Outta Compton
It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
Fear Of A Black Planet
The Low End Theory
The Chronic
Doggystyle
Enter The Wu Tang 36 Chambers
Illmatic
Ready To Die
The Infamous
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Endtroducing (if counted as Hip Hop)
Thats it. That isn't a personal list (mine is topped by Aquemini), but if you are going to look at things from all perspectives nothing else can be argued.
