Well since you askednever mind the fact that the countries where that happens are more likely to be islamic than not
the practice doesn't come from Islam. There are tribes that do this, but not because of Islam. Sometimes they combine the belief and practice with some Islamic beliefs.... but that's only because they want to justify it further.
Women are the ones that preform it..not men. Women do it to protect their daughters (from men and themselves) and because they are superstitious and brainwashed. I know for a fact that not all of the people in Ethiopia and the Sudan do it because of Islam. most of the 200 million or whatever do it because of their tribes sexism.
There are many different way to do it. the Sudanese tribes basically taught the world the most gruesome and complete ways to do it... removing the whole thing, whereas most cultures dont do it all the way.
It predates Islam. I have a muslim cousin who had it done to her though.... I aint never ask her about it cuz i heard from someone else.... but somehow she's married.. I'd never wanna deal with a bytch who had this done cuz sex would be wack as fukk. every female i'm related to in the sudan as had it done.... those nikkas take it way back before islam was ever created.
Islam promote female purity and promotes people acting their best. This whole thing is not in the Quran. shyts not mentioned in the Quran at all. Random nikkas make up some shyt like "once i heard Muhammad or one of Muhammad people said...... blah blah" But basically remote, poor, ignorant Muslims practice it in Africa (barely in Asia) because they want women to remain pure and they are insecure with and about women.

Reza Aslan is Muslim... he became Christian very briefly in his teens but then became Muslim again. He is married to a Christian..

You're taking one part of what Maher said about female genital mutilation and ignoring the lists of other shyt he said about islam thats still relevant in this discussion.

Can you define "liberal media"? TYT, Slate, Rawstory, guardian etc (I'm not sure what other "liberal media platforms" you would be referring to) are just as critical of fundamentalist Islam as they are of fundamentalist Christianity. If you look at TYT's coverage of this Reza Azlan interview for example, Cenk addresses this specific concern and shows that they have been just as critical of Islam.

For example, Family guy shyts on Christianity on an almost weekly basis, Christians respond by bytching and moaning and threatening boycotts. A newspaper prints a picture of Mohammed and Muslims riot all over the world. It's levels to fundamentalism.
The extremism of Christianity is not on the same level as the extremism of Islam and I'm an atheist. I don't have a horse in this race.
