I was told this by old Jamaicans a very long time ago before I could look for myself on the internet and I never forgot it.
I'd imagine some of that Irish component for the U.S was from the Patoto famine in 1850s. British empire was so fukked up the Ottomans Empire offered help and they brushed it off to save face.
