You're missing my point. The Pats defense hasn't been the same since 2004, when they lost the likes of Ty Law and Willie McGinest. Has nothing to do with Spygate.

Acting like spygate is the delineation point for when the Patriots D fell off is just a piss poor attempt to support a flawed narrative.

in the next two years they were top 10
after that they fell off from there

01: 8th (won super bowl)
02: 10th (missed playoffs)
03: 26th (won super bowl)
04: 24th (won super bowl)

Yet anybody who actually watched during those years knows we fielded better defenses during those years than we have since. Just like it's clear to anyone who's watched that the drop off occurred when we lost talent.

And cook brings up a GREAT point about the rule changes (or new "emphasis") as well.

in 04 they were 2nd ranked D by points and 9th in yards allowed

also please understand that Im not making any narratives up
I havent seen beli dial up team-specific front 7 blitzes in a while, for whatever reason
the game against the rams in 01 was fukking beautiful, I shed a tear every time I watch that game.

you cant take a hof coach in beli and simply pin the downfall of defense on lack of talent. sorry. the same coach who is credited (and rightly so) with making good system players out of bums.

so its either beli has kinda fell down to earth or...there is some degree of truth to spygate
