:wtf: lol what are these stats from ?

pats were top ranked D in 03 by points and 7th in yards
in 04 they were 2nd ranked D by points and 9th in yards allowed

funny how you keep pushing that 'those who actually watched' agenda

you aware that non-pats fans might have been watching pats games too ? :heh:

you dont think Ive watched pats games and am just boxscore whoring, say it outright.

My bad, for some reason nfl.com defaulted to ranking worst teams first. Was gonna list the their rankings since 01, but then it seemed just looking at the super bowl years would show how poor looking at rankings would be given their 'bend but don't break' philosophy

But ya, the drop in Patriots defense def occurred when they lost talent. Nobody was lauding the Pats defense in 05 and afterwards.

also please understand that Im not making any narratives up
I havent seen beli dial up team-specific front 7 blitzes in a while, for whatever reason
the game against the rams in 01 was fukking beautiful, I shed a tear every time I watch that game.

you cant take a hof coach in beli and simply pin the downfall of defense on lack of talent. sorry. the same coach who is credited (and rightly so) with making good system players out of bums.

so its either beli has kinda fell down to earth or...there is some degree of truth to spygate :manny:

@cook has a good point tho, so yeah theres that as well

i think its a combination of rule changes and lack of talent. we've also had our entire assistant coaching staff pillaged over the years. its been beli and a bunch of nobodies coaching. but we'll find out this year if beli fell off or not, first time in awhile he's had some legitimate talent on D.

and back on topic, people want to get on the Pats for poor drafts but they pick damn near last every draft and still have had more sustained success than any other team in the NFL.

This excuse is so damn tired. So do the Ravens, Steelers, Eagles when Reid was there, Colts in Peyton's era, Saints, etc. The draft is about recognizing and acquiring talent, regardless of draft position. Starting 22's aren't made up of top 10 picks. And the unsung, never talked about, albeit undoubtedly true reason the Pats have had so much sustained success is because their division is a bunch of can't-get-rights. The fact that the Jets, with the inept offenses they've had since Rex took over, have proven to be their largest division threat speaks volumes.

The Patriots simply never place a premium on top shelf talent, i.e, they always trade back. Also, whenever they do finally find a really good player, they either let him walk once his rookie deal is up, he's injury-prone as hell, or turns out he's gang affiliated (they obviously get a pass for this last one).
