She should've been a little nicer and she might've gotten this information before she signed. But noooo, she can't even say good morning to a nikka.

Oh well.:manny:

She didn’t even sell any records yet though.

This.

And she probably won’t, ever

In general, the vilification of record label ADVANCES is exaggerated to hilarious extents in spaces like this….the name of the term explains it all, it’s an advance payment made before an actual dime is ever made…it’s such a simple concept that gets made into some kinda evil predatory thing…when it reality the vast majority of signed artist aren’t profitable…

so let’s say a label gives this horrible man-voiced unbearable NYC accented broad a million dollar advance and she inevitably flops because ain’t nobody outside the Tri state trying to hear her screaming about not wanting to tell you good morning …they don’t get any of that money back or any of the fortune they spent in make up and hair trying to make her half way cute, or flying her all around the country on promo runs trying to get her popping, or paying for the studio time to record her struggle raps…they just took that L and she just got a million dollars to pretend to be a rap star :heh: ….record label “debt” is not like real debt where they can confiscate your possessions or anything else…their only recourse to recoup that money is to pull it from royalties on the back end that she’s not gonna be generating in the first place lol

People really underestimate the money and effort it takes to do the whole artist thing fully independent and out of your own pocket…every couple months we get a thread with muhfukkas legitimately befuddled why someone like Benny The Butcher signs a deal with a label like Def Jam :mjlol:…duh! For the check

Hmm.

You're right, is someone with good credit sets a contract up where they get a cut that money is the other person's - not the artist.

I wonder if legally the debt is in the artists name.

If it's co-signed, the cosigner is on the hook for everything.

If these rappers don't sell they're ruining their credit bigtime.

Ruin credit for getting some fame.

There's levels to this.

Taylor Swift is out here earning big, true profits while mad vlog bytches try to tear her down.

And I too think she's too much sometimes, but factual business wise - even her announcing her album at the Grammys was a right prepared hustle.
Taylor Swift had to re-record her old music to get ownership. Don't think because she good now that it was always gravy.

The other question is .. is that debt in their stage name or real name?

Well yeah he gets a kick back and probably much more over the lifetime of the deal

The way they trap them as far as I've seen is usually by setting an arbitrary condition to complete the contract and then moving that goalpost

So for example, they'll give you a 5 album deal, give you an advance for each album (which is the loan/budget for the albums), and then from there take a percentage out of everything you do musically from that point forward. Then they can decide that certain things don't or do meet the criteria to be called an album, decide not to clear certain songs, etc. All type of fukkery to keep you under contract

Corporate bullying, really

Edit: this isn't to say gotti is robbing all his artists cus he very well could be doing good business, I'm just saying that this is usually how those things go
Some artists used to do a greatest hits to get out the last 1-2 albums but labels are hip to that now and for some, Greatest Hits don't count to your obligations.

lol 5 decades later and these ppl still ignorantly getting taken advantage of

It’s sad and pathetic

the average person doesn't understand legalese. Nor do they understand that words they do understand, may have a different meaning contractually or in the realm of finance....Or they just believe that they're smart enough to not enlist the services of a lawyer.

And more than likely, she's not signed to a major label...and probably is weighing her options if she does have an offer.

thats fine. but its important to know what you dont know.

if you get hemmed up by police and your freedom is at risk, you would hire a lawyer no?
people need to realize they gotta do the same thing with their finances.

its been going on too long and there are too many horror stories out there for this to be a thing. I understand that in many cases its desparation to get some quick bread and get out the hood; but still.

True. I actually want to hear her old vs re-recordings.

That's a tonne of work to do, especially if she wants it sounding the same. If that's even allowed.

Poor girl. Her team trash. All of em. Lawyers too.

This shouldnt be news to her. Its the first thing someone with any sense will tell her.

Or maybe she hardheaded.

Sad all around. She better get to working if she signed already.

She also has to change some lyrics ..
EPMD did it for their greatest hits (Out of Business, disc 2). So those old Fresh/Sleeping Bag songs we remade. Anything that was released on Def Jam used the regular recordings

The problem is the artist hires an entertainment lawyer to explain the contract to them, not to determine if its a smart move personally. It's not their job to be your life coach... They only say this means this and that means that... Do you agree or want to add something

That's because people don't understand business. They think the money is something they should trick off and that they made it when really it means the work has begun. They advanced you one million dollars so you have to figure out how to work that money and make a profit so you can truly eat and the label can eat too.

The issue with the advances are the amount of interest you have on them and the fact the labels sometimes 360 artist. I get there argument that they made the initial investment but the labels don't make the music the artist do and they should be able to make an income stream that is all their own.

Ray Charles, James Brown, Sam Cooke gave brothers and sisters the blueprint

Then u have artists especially rappers in the 80s signing to shytty labels like sleeping bag records and even majors getting fukk

Then Master P, E-40, Birdman/slim gave rappers another blueprint , then Nipsey and these nikkas especially female artists stay getting fukked over

Damn, didn't know EPMD had to do that.

That's why labels sign them young. These are veterans in the game running circles around these young naive and most of the times dumb teenagers. That Yo Gotti video of Glo signing her life away had repeated cycle written all over it. No lawyer around, just her hood homegirls. I don't even think she made money off her main hit song.

Just by the clip, some of the info was still going over her head.
