For elementary schools kids, especially black kids who are/were already behind, falling further behind isn’t a short term loss, it’s something that will set them back their entire lives. I’m not going to argue you on how you feel, but it’s shortsighted to bucket this as a short term loss, both for the individual kids and the black community as a whole.
Opening up midway probably doesn't undermine this potential outcome, although I'm open to evidence showing otherwise. Also, we already have evidence of the failures and contagion effects of midway measures in other context. And if we take midway measures and the contagion is on par with the other attempts the downside would be significant, whereas if everything things goes right the potential upside is probably trivial. Thus, given the cost/benefit analysis of the situation it would be best to just close schools.
