the feeling is pity
For starters... the album is good but not as great as people on this site make it out to be (and certainly not even close to being better than GKMC). It has a decent concept, good replay value, and the "hits" out of the "hits and misses" are top of the bleacher homeruns. However, I don't know why this album's imperfections are so overlooked.
First off, the production is cool but there are glaring problems. I understand it's an independent album so everything is not gonna sound top of the brass expensive, but there are definitely some pedestrian beats on here (see "My Hatin' Joint", "Grooveline Pt. 1", and "nikkaHs.already.know.davers.flow"). Then you have the piss-poor produced songs like "Nightmare On Figg St.", "Druggys Wit Hoes Again", and "Sexting". That's already 6 average/shytty beats scattered on the album, way too much for supposedly album of the year.
I understand Schoolboy Q isn't meant to be placed in the same box as Ab-Soul and Kendrick, he's a gangster rapper and doesn't do the big words conscious deal, but he didn't impress me with any verses on here. His subject matter and flows were good, but I could listen to Dom Kennedy's Yellow Album if I wanted to hear mediocre rapping with good productions/concepts.
His delivery can be corny. When he tries to yell on the tracks and be all aggressive and whatnot, it ruins the song cuz the voice isn't convincing enough. When he sticks to his regular voice and delivery, (Sacrilegious, Gangsta In Designer, My Homie, Raymond 1969) it turns out to be a classic. I just listened to that new Yay Yay track, and the production and hook is good but once he starts rapping with that shytty ass delivery it fukks everything up. This is why Kendrick & Jay Rock are the first ones to be signed out of TDE; they have a good bravado delivery and can ride a beat like no other, especially Kendrick.
It's a good album, but definitely not better than good kid, mAAd city and definitely not album of the year. I honestly thought Ab-Soul's album was better and sounded more fresh. Please, if you disagree, explain to me how this album is better than Kendrick's.
As far as the beats, like I said, I don't think it was a simple case of hot or not. Hot or not alone makes me think of guys that are expecting 18 tracks of up tempo bangers or something. I don't feel any track on the album was filler and the production (and sequencing of tracks) is why I feel that way. If you had said Sexting and Druggys were overly simple I could agree, but pedestrian/piss poor screams of missing the point. Those beats aren't supposed to be stars of the album. The album doesn't really have stars. It's a steady journey all the way through, which is why I think so many people say they can listen to it front to back with no skipping. This was inspired by the recent strands of Q threads, but I've felt this way about the album for a while and a lot of posts relating to the album came before these past 2 days.
It doesn't take a vastly distinct taste in production to determine if a beat is hot or not. If it's mediocre or on the fringe, then that's when a person's taste can factor in, but I really can't see how anyone can disagree with me about beats like "Sexting" and "Druggys Wit Hoes Again". Taste in music usually concerns genres, not certain sounds in one genre alone (but that's neither here nor there)
As far as the music not trying to be anything more, I would have to disagree . It's a concept album, contrasting habits of his old vs. contradictions. I wouldn't even say that there a lot of party tracks on the album, most of them are conceptual and contemplative. H&C is definitely more varied but I would actually say its a darker album than GKMC. I mean, like I said, its a great album and I enjoy it, but its not flawless and isn't, in my opinion, a contender against Kendrick's album.
solid, probably top 10 of 2012 but it's not fukking with LIG or GKMC and it's well known
