At the part where I have to sneak into the warehouse, keep getting caught and I made it to the warehouse but I got caught at the last minute so I had to run and the awkward controls didn't help either. :MJlfacepalm:

Old man I helped earlier gave me a map...just need to make sure the guard don't see me

I barely got through to warehouse #8. Problem wasnt me getting caught, problem was it was about 10:15pm and Ryo didnt want to break curfew with ine-san lookin at you like

I've played both games and liked them both when they came out....it's been so long that I stopped caring (at least as much as I used to....I was really obsessed with this game when it came out. I still have my original copies in mint condition).
I also feel like the series is going to feel very dated in comparison to modern games....and Im not too excited about the idea of playing a game that requires you to play several full length games to get the whole story. I don't have that kind of time or patience anymore.
In this case "dated" pretty much means "handholding". All of the "modern innovations" that shenmue is missing is just stuff to make the games easier or more mindless.

Having a map with waypoints and quest markers, tutorial levels, dialogue options, some random person in your ears/head telling yo what to do, etc is all stuff we've grown accustomed to, but really don't make for a better experience.

The beauty of shenmue is that it's the first and really the only game in which what to do next is all organic. You have to explore the world and pay attention to your surroundings to progress, and on the flip side you can spend hours doing your own thing not progressing the story at all, and that's enjoyable too.

It's a really unique gaming experience, and pretty much an exact opposite to what modern gaming has become.

All innovation could be referred to as "hand holding" then.
The reality is, a lot of people are not interested in being completely lost in a huge environment, or have to restart their play through because they haven't played in a couple weeks and forgot where they left off.
I'm a huge fan of the game so a majority of my criticism comes from bitterness of how long they have taken to keep this story alive, and also knowing that the story won't be concluded for another couple releases.
For me...when I talk about this particular game feeling dated, I mean specifically in terms of animation, voice acting, overall presentation, and pacing.
As games (the entire entertainment medium) have progressed, a lot of the "padding" or "fluff" has been removed for a more streamlined experience that gets to the "point" a lot faster than the games of yesterday.
I'm cautious with this series because of how long it has taken, and the fact that Yakuza is such a similar game yet is not very widely received in The US.
I would be surprised if people that are not familiar with the Shenmue series at all, pick this up for the first time and really enjoy it. Especially if they had played a game like Yakuza Kiwami/0/ or 6 before ever playing a Shenmue game.

" a lot of people" suck:beli: which is why some of the most shallow games are also the most popular. Majority of the games in the top 10 this year are nowhere near as good as their popularity would suggest.

Alternative is the way modern games do it. Abruptly end the story then leave some kind of cliffhanger at the end. I'd rather they let the story play out, than force the creators to end it for monetary reasons like your favorite Kojima does every time:usure:

All the stuff that will always become outdated, therefore all the stuff that doesn't really matter to me when it comes to gaming. I know y'all are into movie games but shenmue is much more than that.

The fact that you keep comparing Shenmue to Yakuza tells me that you don't really "get" what Shenmue is about.

This is a very lazy comparison. Outside of setting and perspective the games are not very similar at all.

I'm a first time Shenmue player and I got the game last night. My thoughts so far is that it is an original and breathtaking experience. The soundtrack is also killer. So far I made it to when they told me Charlie comes to town at 7PM.

:blessed:

Thats awesome to hear. I figured most people playing it for the first time would think its jank....but nah greatness is always great. :blessed:
